The Baldwin PubliG Library:facts afigiires
By Joan Delaney
More than most local institutions, Ubrarieis reflect the communities in which liiey are located. Without the benefit of regular infusions of state aid but also unencumbered by the high level of regulation which impacts schools, fire and sanitation departments, libraries are truly an expression of what community residents want, need and are willing to fund.
The proposed Baldwin library budget for 2007 OS is 53.687.940. which is an increase of SI71.125 (.4.87 percent'! over the 2006.07 budget. Unlike schools, libraries do not recei\'e regular slate aid and so $3,351,440 of that total budget must be raised through taxes. The actual tax
levy increase is S 156.625 which is 4.90 percent higher than the current budget. The proposed budget contains monies for salaries, estimated salary increases and benefits, as well as funding for budget items that are an outgrowth of the expanded facilitx* as well as enhanced services.
Librarj- Director Maria Sysak noted, "We are ver\^ aware that we serve the whole community." She explained that the role of. libraries has not changed: "We provide information." Today, however, the methods of providing that information have changed and the expanded library makes it possible to reach out more effectively.
She noted that the services of libraries :ure constantly changing. "\\'e want to attract young people; the}- are
our future. Both young and old are receiving more of their informatioii through technology and the library n\ust keep up."
Assistant Director Catherine Overton said that this past year, there were i ,200 attendees at free computer workshops, many senior citizens who were not trained in coniputers either in school or in the workplace. There were 28,099 people who used the computer room and 130,000 people accessed the web page.
Ms. Sysak explained that in a diverse community of varying income levels, some people only have computer access at the library'. "Today, people must often submit resumes online. They can do that at the library. We also provide information for
career couiiseling." She added, "The! future workforce has to be trained aiidi the library helps to do that."
Gomputer instruction and learning | will soon extend even to the library'sj littlest patrons with a special computer and computer software program forj youngsters from ages 2-6.
This focused project, fundedl through an Early Childhood! Development grant facilitated by state! Senator Charles Fuschillo, reflects thej range of services libraries should pro-l vide in a society where, according tol Ms. Sysak, "not everyone can afford! to send their child to nursery school orl preschool. If not addressed early, that I lag haunts the child and it is hard tof catch up."
