CURIOUS GEORGE greets his curious fans
Freeport board approves school budget
by Mark Treske
The flooding that has plagued Freeport since the beginning of the week had still not encirth subsided when the Freepon school board met at Atkinson on Wednesday. April 18. President Debra McQuillan, expressing concern about flood waters tlireatening her house, asked the board's and public's co-operation in completing the meeting before the high tide expected at 10 p.m.
After a moment of silence for the victims at \'irginia Tech. the board turned its attention to the finalization and approval of the 2007-2008 budget. Deputy Superintendent Kishore Kimcham discussed changes made since the -April 12 meeting. The money allotted for capital improvements, originally slated to receive $450,000 of the state aid increase, will receive 5225,000. for a total of Si .7 million.
This and other changes made since the previous meeting will result in a finid expenditure budget of 5134,876.027 - an increase of 580.000 over the budget's original draft, and an increase of S6..i66.15I. or 4.95 percent, over 2006-2007. Rexenues are slated to increase h\-
55.081,190. leavina a net tax lew increase of 51284,961. or 1.72''percent.
The difficulty of the process was shown in the discussion that followed. Trustee Michael Raab believed that more of the increase should go towards lowering the t;ix rate. "This community needs a bre;ik." Mr. Kuncham responded tliat almost all of the rise was used on the tax rate.
Citing needed PA repairs at Atkinson and auditorium seats in one of the school being dangerously in need of repair, Mr, Kuncham noted that the district has a responsibility toward those it educates, "There are things that really need repair." His thoughts were seconded by trustee Debra Mule, who, though supporting the budget, washed that the numbers from April 12 could be used.
In the end, the budget was appaived 4-1 (trustee Raab voting no) and w ill be submitted to a vote on Tuesday, May 15. The Leader inquired of the Clerk's Office regarding the school board election also taking place on May 15 and was infomied that trustees Raab and McQuillan w ill be seeking re-election, and will be opposed by challenger Mike Pomerico.
