DEC hearing on
Roosevelt contamination
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in conjunction with the New York Slate Department of Health (COH) will hold a public meeting on 'Wednesday, May 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. to update the public about the progress related to the investigation and remediation of contamination at the new Roosevelt Middle School construction site.
The meeting will be held at the United Cerebral Palsy Center at 380 'Washington .Avenue, Roosevelt. At the meeting DEC and DOH staff will discuss the site investigation and remediation, sampling of the soil on properties off the new middle school site, groundwater sampling and related health issues.
Currently, soil and debris with contaminant levels above the soil cleanup objectives are being and will be excavated and disposed of at off-site facilities. The school will not open until the property has been cleaned up to the satisfaction of
DEC and DOH in order to protect the health of students, faculty and staff of the school-
At the meeting participants will see presentations by DEC and DOH staff. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about the cleanup actions currently being undertaken under the oversight of DEC and DOH.
Copies of investigative reports for this site are available at the Roosevelt School District's Central Administration Office, 240 Denton Place, Roosevelt, NY 11575 and the Roosevelt Library, 27 West Fulton Avenue, Roosevelt. Copies of this material are also available at the DEC's office in Stony Brook.
The DEC expects remediation of this site to be completed before the summer of 2007. The middle school should be completed in early 2008. The DEC will determine the need for further on-site or off-site groundwater sampling once the soil remediation is finished.
