TACKLING THE TOUGH PROBLEMS TOGETHER made a practice state math exam easier for this Freeport father and son. More than 125 parent-student teams took part in a shared-learning experience that will help children prepare for March's assessments. It was the first-ever Saturday Parent-Student Test Preparation Day, held at Atkinson School and Dodd Middle School.

Freeport trustees passed a moratorium on construction of single family homes Monday to put the brakes on the building of homes too large for their neighborhoods, but the action does not affect projects already approved or those that conform to certain guidelines.
In his presentation to the board. Assistant Village Attorney Howard Colton said the amendment to the local zoning law, which would continue for si.x months with the option to extend it to IS months, would give local officials time to evaluate existing zoning classifications and also curtail large scale development in many neighborhoods.
He said many recent projects have been "out of scale and not compatible with surrounding homes."
His comments were echoed bv
architect Russell Jordan, who testified at the public hearing at the board's regular meeting that the intent of the law-is to give the village "breathing room to re-examine the zoning of those districts designated Residence A and Residence .A.\."
Mr. Jordan said that many developers have been "under a great deal of pressure to purchase large lots" and demolish the existing. smaller dwellings and replace them with new, larger homes.

Ms. Foley said that Chamber Director Doug Diana, also a member of the Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning, confirmed the rumor, although the manager of the shopping center declined to comment. "We believe that it's knowledge of the proposed revitalization [scheduled for Merrick Road and Grand Avenue] which heljjed in this decisionmaking," said Ms. Foley.
She noted that Best Buy would not have to reconfigure the space, nor would it be expected that there would
be any zoning or variance issues
In speaking to The Leader last month concerning the closing of Waldbaum's, Mr. Diana had said that there were rumors that a gym would be taking that space. He stressed that he believed that the community wanted "something more" and said that Town of Hempstead planning officials would want to speak to the shopping center's owners and managers.
Continuing her comments at the January 16, chamber meeting, Ms. Foley described the most recent meeting on January 5, that she, Mr. Diana, and Co-President Doris Duffy had with Charles Theofan, the town's commissioner of.planning and development, concerning the proposed five-acre revitalization.
These meetings have taken place at regular intervals with Mr. Theofan updating the chamber on the (continued on page 9)
