The Village of Freeport hosted the members of the local band from the German town of Oberviechtach, located in the Bavarian region, near the Czech border.
Freeport's volunteer firefighters visited the area last year and met with members of the town who expressed an interest in marching in New York City's 50th Steuben Day Parade.
With the help of village Trustee Don Miller, the group was e.xtended an invitation to the parade, which recognizes German Major General von Steuben's role in assisting General Washington in teaching the Continental Army the essentials of military drill and discipline. General Steuben helped reorganize the
Continental Army and guide it to victory. The pageant also celebrates German-American heritage. On Saturday, the Oberviechtach band marched in the parade up Fifth Avenue. "They were simply amazing," said Trustee Miller.
The Stadkapelle & Festspielgnippe of Oberviechtach performed Monday evening under a tent in the parking lot opposite Otto's Sea Grill on the Nautical Mile.
The crowd of Freeport residents and \isitors enjoyed the 100-piece band and the actors who put on a performance describing the history of Oberviechtach's most famous citizen. Dr. Johann Andreas Eisenbarth, a 17th Century surgeon.
