NAACP town meeting addresses hate crimes

Hate crimes - displays of noose hangings and swastikas - have been on the rise throughout Nassau County, New York State and across the South, black leaders told residents at a meeting held at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roosevelt on Thursday, November 1.
Even though New York State has made it a felony to display a noose on
public or private property, local black leaders remain concerned, urging residents to support federal legislation that would make noose hangings illegal.
The meeting was sponsored jointly by the NAACP Freeport-Roosevelt chapter and the National Organization of Black Law Executives (NrO.B.L.E.) and was led by keynote speaker Bob Law, a former radio talk show host. Other participants included activists, organization leaders and members of the community.
Freeport resident and local activist Wilton Robinson, a member of both the NAACP Freeport-Roosevelt chapter and N.O.B.L.E., stressed that the passage of a federal law against noose hanging would be a hallmark in our society.
Such legislation would allow the nation to progress away from eras of rampant racism and lack of civil rights. "We need to have [federal] legislation in place to stop things such as the hanging of nooses because it is a hate
crime and one that cannot be tolerated," Mr. Robinson said.
Many politicians and local activists of different races support Mr. Robinson's assertion. The New York State Senate passed a bill on October 22 to make it a Class E felony to display a noose on public or private property. The measure was sponsored by Senator Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) and forbids a noose firom being "etched, painted, drawn or oth-(continued on page 3)
