Plaza School visits 'the Wall'
Freeport school bond approved
In a light turnout on a rainy day, voters approved a $17 million capital project by a vote of 1,122 to 74. Work will now go forward on improvements at all but one of the district's eight school buildings — and will come at no net increase in taxes.
"It's important to note that we were able to take advantage of one-time only state funding through the EXCEL program (Expanding Our Children's Education and Learning)." says Superintendent of Schools Dr. Eric L. Eversley. "Costs will be covered by the combination of building aid and EXCEL aid. Even so, voters had to
authorize the capital improvements."
On the list: replacements of roofs, windows and aging boilers, the installation of file alarm systems where needed and repairs to external masonry walls.
In some areas emergency lighting will be added and $575,000 has been eamtaiked for technology upgrades, including telephone and security system improvements. The only building that will not be renovated: the New Visions School which was constructed only a few years ago.
"The district's priority is to make building envelopes airtight and weatherproof," says Dr. Eversley.
In observance of Veterans Day and the 25th Anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., Michael Sofarelli, a Baldwin High School graduate from the Class of 1992 and author of "Letters on the Wall: Offerings and
Remembrances from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial," which he dedicated to his father, a Vietnaiti veteran; his wife, Leigh, a teacher at Plaza School; and his mother Karin, a retired teacher from Shubert School, joined volunteers from across the country to read all 58,200 names from the Wall over the course of the long weekend.
Michael Sofarelli read the name of Stephen Carlin, a college friend of his father, and Leigh Sofarelli read the name of Baldwin resident Anthony Alfred Giretti. Said Mrs. Sofarelli, "My reading of Mr. Giretti's name was a tribute to this Baldwin soldier as well as the school district that has been so good to me."
LEIGH SOFARELLI places a letter of thanks from her Plaza School students at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Baldwin developer is selected
By Joan Delaney
The revitalization proposed for seven acres of Baldwin, at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Merrick Road, can now move ahead more quickly with the approval of a specific urban development plan and the selection of developers by the Hempstead Town Board at its meeting on November 13.
Developers Basser-Kaufman and the Engel Burman Group will work together to bring the much-anticipated project to completion. Town Councilman Anthony Santino called the occasion, "a great day for Baldwin," acknowledging that
the revitalization, which had been discussed in many forms by both county and town officials over the past decade, was "a long time in coming." _^
He said that the high-quality development "will shape the future of Baldwin for years to come" and described it as "the last piece of the puzzle," following the library and fire house expansions and the facade improvements and streetscapes on the east side of the street.
Commissioner of Planning and Development Charles Theofan said that these developers were selected because they brought a plan that met all the
