Baldwin Middle School's 'Colors'
Seven Baldwin Middle School students had their artwork on display in the Long Island Expressions Art Exhibit at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook.
Sixth-grader Chandler Prevatt exhibited a colored-pencil'drawing called "Fun in the Sun," and eighth-graders Jay Wong, Robyn
Cascio, Yanira Albeno, Tess Mills, Joselynn Escobar, and Thalia Abreu collaborated on a watercolor piece called "Autumn Leaves Swirl in our Colorful World." A reception for the students and their parents was held last month and the artwork was on display throughout the month.
Every day more than 80 Americans "die from gun violence. Here in Nassau County, there wei-e 67 gun-related injuries in 2007 up from 54 the year before. And in Freeport, there were two gun-related shootings that took-the lives of Miguel Adames in July and Michael Muniz in December of 2007.
To address this issue, Nassau County Executive Tiiomas R. Suozzi, Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey, District Attomey Kathleen Rice and community leader and president of S.U.N.Y. College at Old Westbury, Dr. Calvin O. Butts, ni announced recently the creation and implementation of the Nassau County Police Department's GunStoppers program.
GunStoppers is an anonymous tip program that offers rewards of up to $2,000 to individuals who provide information leading to the recovery of an illegal gun.
FBI data shows that nearly 1.7 million guns have been reported stolen in the past ten years and only 40 percent of those were recovered. The missing guns, over 80 percent of which are taken from homes or cars, "most likely fuel the black market for criminals," according to the website Americans for Gun Safety.
The GunStoppers program allows anyone with information about any illegal guns to call a toll-free hotline 1 (877) 4GUN411 (448-6411) to make an anonymous tip that the Nassau County Police Department will then investigate.
• '"Individuals can be assured that this program is based on anonymity and that payment of reward money will be through a 'blind' withdrawal method," according to a press release from the Nassau police.
Here's how it works - the person who gives the tip is given a code number to use when calling back to verify whether there has, in fact, been a recovery of an illegal gun. If there has been a recovery, the anonymous tipper is told to go to a specific branch of a bank and provide the code number to the teller. The teller then pays the cash reward to the individual.
This same program has been unveiled in other parts of the country. New York City has been involved in-the GunStoppers program since 2001. Other cities that have the program include Baltimore, Newark and Fort Lauderdale.
District Attorney Rice called the GunStoppers program "an innovative and aggressive tool that will allow law enforcement to target crime guns and bring their owners and dealers to justice. It will be an important component of an unprecedented initiative that marks a giant step towards eradicating- Nassau streets of illegal guns."-
Call the hoUine at 1,(877) 4GUN411 or 1(877)448-6411. . -
"The rewards for calling GunStoppers are safer streets and compensation for your efforts," said County Executive Suozzi.
