Baldwin revitalization is topic of Santino forum

Former Commissioner of Planning and Development Charles Theofan's presence' and detailed" progress reports on Baldwin's proposed revitalization were missed at the March 26 joint Baldwin/South Hempstead community meeting held by Town of Hempstead Senior Councilman Anthony Santino at the South Hempstead Fire House.
Instead, Mr. Santino presented some general comments relative to the seven acre development project slated for Grand Avenue and Merrick Road. He noted that "The formal contract between the town and developers is expected to be signed in a couple of weeks," a statement that was made in November,' 2007 when the developers
Basser Kaufman and Engel Burman were first selected.
He added that there are "meetings with the property owners and the developers" with the hope that there will be "regular friendly sales agreements" rather than the need to acquire the property through the process of eminent domain.
This intent has been voiced throughout the revitalization preparations and was reinforced at a press confei^ence held by Supervisor Kate Murray in December. He estimated that "Demolition will take place at the end of this year with construction in 2009, as weather permits," a projection that is much later than original
