New wind park on the horizon?
by Douglas Finlay and Laura Schofer
Here we blow again.
Emerging from the shadow of the defunct FPL-LIPA wind park project, • Hauppauge-based Winergy Power LLC looks to build a wind park in the Atlantic Ocean off Long Island and plug into the New York State grid at the 13th Street substation in Queens run by Consolidated Edison of New York City. The seven-year-old Winergy, a. wind energy
provider that applied to the New York State Independent System Operators (ISO) agency to plug into the electric grid, will build three deep-water windmill platforms between. Plum Island and the Island's North Fork by 2010 to test conditions for setting up the windmills off the south shore of Long Island, remarked Dennis Quaranta,'the company's CEO. ' Mr. Quaranta would not comment on whether the wind park would be built off Jones Beach. "We have applied to the [U.S.] Mineral'
Management Service to get permission to place a met [meteorological] tower,to study the site in the Atlantic Ocean," he said, without divulging the area until the application is approved.
He noted it would be several miles south of a proposed liquified natural gas plant being considered off the Long Beach shoreline, and several miles south of the Nantucket-to-Ambrose shipping lane, the major shipping lane into New York Harbor from the east. It will connect through underwater
cables to the Queens substation.
He also made clear the Winergy project and the recently dissembled FPL project with LIPA are two different projects. "The LIPA project, was no more than five miles from the shore. These tur-, bines will be nearly 18 miles off shore," he explained.
He said the nature of the ocean to produce fog and haze would prevent the wind turbines from being seen a good deal of the time. Any turbines that would (continued on page 3)
