GHOULS ON THE MARCH- John,Wharton donns'the nnask, and marches with Giant Step Children's Day Care at the Freeport Halloween Parade and Rre Safety Expo held in the (Freeport's) Waterfront District on Sunday. Co-produced.by the Freeport Fire Department and Freeport Chamber of Commerce, the event, held under sunny autumn skies, drew hundreds of kids, young and old, to march in-costume, learn better fire safety procedures, aim a fire hose at a "house on fire," and view demonstrations by the Village fire Department and emergency medical technicians. At parade's end you could sample and judge a clam chowder cook-off (congrats to winners Brjacco's, Waterfront Tavern, Otto's, and E.B. Elliot's), or participate in a pumpkin-carving contest. Also featured: pony rides, the best-in-parade costume contest, and a chance to-go restaurant trick-or-treat-ing along Freeport's famed Nautica'l Mile. According to the fire departmient's Ed Freidman: '[ We were very pleased with the attendance and enthusiasm this event generated; we're already planning to produce it again next year... perhaps with a few additional surprises!". . .•• ' •

Baldwin High School art students participated in The Memory Project initiative as part of their senior portfolio last spring. .The students created original portraits from photos of children in Haiti who have been abandoned, orphaned, abused or neglected.
The purpose of the portraits is to provide these children with a personal keepsake and special memory of their youth to honor their heritage and identity so they can build a positive self-image.
Although the portraits were scheduled to be returned to the children last June, the delivery was postponed indefinitely because of security concerns in Haiti. However, an employee of the Friends of the Orphans program finally delivered the portraits last month, and the children were delighted with their creative likenesses.
As of July more than 16,000 portraits have tJeen produced by high school art students across the country, and Baldwin High School art students will continue to participate in this humanitarian initiative this school year.
