Freeport's Civil War past
FREEPORT'S PARROT GUN on Sunrise Highway and Centre Street.
Lincoln's long shadow over our village
THE USS HARTFORD
Editor'i note: Toddy is the lOOth anniversary of Lincoln's birth
Compiled by
Regina Feeney, Librarian Cynthia Krieg, Village Historian
Freeport has been honored to have had four presidential visits (George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Tafl, and Dwight Eisenhower). Though Abraham Lincoln never made it to Freeport, relics from the 1860s located throughout the viUage remind us of his presidency.
The Lincoln Flag
In 1949, the Freeport Memorial Library
was presented a 36-star "Lincoln Flag" by
Knowlton K. Boyce. The flag, 5 1/2 by 9 feet, was made by Mr. Boyce's grandmother, Lucy Wiggin Keith, for President Lincoln's, inaugural. Jt. was later .used at Lincoln's funeral and was on his funeral train as it passed through New York City in April 1865.
In 1991, the flag was rediscovered by a library employee in the archives of the

archival storage. The flag is now in a
wrapped box and is stored in The Long Island Room collection of the Freeport Memorial Library.
CivU War plaques
The Ubrary also has a bronze plaque inscribed with the Gettysburg Address. Donated to the library in 1927 by the
Woman's Relief Corps, the plaque still
hangs on a wall in the original building. Across from this plaque is another plaque
honoring 13 Freeporters who died during
the Civil War. Of the 12 battles etched into
the stone edifrce of the library, Gettysburg is the only Civil War battle commemorated.
Civil War trophy
Standing on the triangle on Sunrise Highway and Centre Street is a 30-pound Parrot rifle. Made in Washington, DC in 1861, the rifle was on the USS Hartford

A setback for Baldwin revitalization
by Laura Schofer
The five-acre parcel at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Merriclc Road in Baldwin, slated for renovation through the Town of Hempstead, has come to a screeching halt because the developer, Basser-Kaufman and the Engel Burman Group, pulled out of the project.
In a letter sent to Baldwin residents from Kate Murray, supervisor of the Town of Hempstead, and town
Councilman Anthony Santino, the
developer ^vas unable **to secure adequate financing and [had] difficulties
in. attracting retail/restaurant tenants." The letter pointed to the "current global economic crisis" as a reason for this setback.
An agreement between the development group and the Town of Hempstead had been signed in October and at the December 16 community meeting. Councilman Santino

told residents the project was moving
forward despite the economy.
"Most retail and commercial [businesses] are in a time of belt-tightening," he said. "This is not a time of a robust economy. However, we will move forward and weather the storm."
The letter, dated January 30, was sent to all Baldwin households and reassured residents that despite setbacks, the project will be completed.
"Specifically, we have called upon
the town's planning commissioner,
Richard BiancuUi, to commence discussions with another development
group which had responded to the
town's request for Baldwin redevelopment proposals," it stated.
The letter points to the interest of the Blumenfeld Development Group, which still "has a keen interest in the project and the Planning Department is aggressively negotiating to reach an agreement."
