-Residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 19rto vote on proposed school budgets for the 2009-2010 school year in Freeport and Baldwin.
Freeport tax levy stable'
In Freeport, there will be no increase to the tax levy for the second yeaj: in a row. The proposed budget for the 2009-2010 school year is for $143,587,930 which is.a 1.61 percent budget-to-budget increase from last year. However, even though the budget will increase, there will be a reduction in the tax levy by 0.09 percent. ,
The tax levy is the total amount of revenue a school district must raise through property taxes after state aid, other revenue and aipplied fiind balances have been applied .to a district's proposed budget.
Deputy Superintendent Kishore Kuncham, in a report at the April 1 school board meeting, explained that the reduction to the tax levy is the result of applying an increase of $2,250,000 to the Fund Balanceras well,as making-cuts.to the' expenditure budget in the areas of." salaries, fringe benefits, professionar development, e'q'uipment, transportation knd supplies.',
Dr. Eric Eversely, superintendeiit'of Freeport schools, said that despite spending cuts and the eliniination of Foundation aid tlie proposed district budget will ''continue programs that are important to Freeport's students."
Freeport Trustee Debra Mul6 is running unopposed for anotherterin'on the school board. ' '
Residents may vote on Tuesday, May 19, between the
hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. in the usual polling places. If you are not a registered voter you may register to vote at the Freeport Administration Building, 235 North Ocean Avenue, weekdays.until May 12. '
Baldwin proposes 1.45% tax hike
In Baldwin the district is proposing a budget of $114,009,350 which is a budget-to-budget increase of 2.89 percent, the lowest increase in the past six years. If passed, the tax levy would increase by 1.45 percent.
According to the Baldwin School District's brochure a combination of savings programs and federal stimulus funding for public education helped keep costs down for taxpayers.
"The district continues to participate in cooperative bidding which results in real cost savings for the district," states the brochure. BOCES programs supplies and services also help keep costs down for the taxpayer. The district added some staff this year in order to meet • State rtiandates.
Incumbent schpol.board Trustees Maiy Jo O'Hagan and BA Schoen are: being challenged by Jinett Harper and Tanya Parris.
Residents may vote at Baldwin High School on Tuesday, May. 19, between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m..
If you are not a registered voter you may do so at the district clerk's office or at any school building during school hours.'The last day to register to vote is May 14.
