It's now D'Brickashaw Ferguson Way!
At 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, the Village of Freeport dedicated South Ocean Avenue in the name of a true homegrown success D'Brickashaw Ferguson. The Jets' star offensive lineman grew up on South Ocean Avenue, now dubbed D'Brickashaw Ferguson Way.
"I think it's crazy because growing up, you see a lot of names on su^eets and don't know these individuals," Ferguson said. "Eventually, you learn, 'OK, this guy did such and such.' But I think it's great that I can kind of be put up there in those similar lights and say, 'Hey, this was not only a football player, this guy was a philanthropist [who] gave back to the community with his time.'
Those who attended the ceremony included Freeport's Mayor Andrew Hardwick, Deputy
Mayor Robert Kennedy, Village Trustee Carmen Pineryo, Village Trustee Bill White, Superintendent of Freeport Public Schools Dr. Kishore Kunchaih, Freeport High School Principal Ernie Kight, state Senator Charles Fuschillo, state Assemblyman Dave McDonough, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, town Councilwoman Angle Cullin, county Legislator Dave Denenberg, and Town Clerk Mark Bonilla.
D'Brickashaw Ferguson graduated from Freeport High School in 2002 where he won - several awards including the Martone Award for best lineman, and the Thorpe Award, which is awarded to the best player on Long Island. Ferguson was the first lineman to win the Thorpe
