Westward ho! at Atkinson
Caroline G. Atkinson School turned the clocks back to the days of the Westward Expansion with a comprehensive hands-on program that had the whole fifth-grade class churning butter, panning for gold and line-dancing to "Cotton-Eyed Joe."
"Pioneer Day is a culminating activity ^""^at brings history to life," said fifth-grade —teacher Karen Wecksler, one of the coordinators of the event.
"The fifth-grade class spent weeks learning about the Westward Expansion, the Lewis and Clark Expedition and life as it was during the 1800s. TTiis event allows students to experience in an interactive way what they had learned in the textbook," she said.
"After taking the state [New York state social studies] test back in November and working intensely in the classroom, this is a day where the students can relax a bit and just he kids."
Girls, some dressed in aprons and kerchiefs, and boys in suspenders and straw hats, had fun playing games pertinent to the time period. '.'Drop the Hankie" (similar to
"Duck, Duck, Goose"), bean bag toss,
checkers, and three-legged races were all

the gymnasium. Back in the art room, students constructed log cabins out of pretzels, popsicle sticks, cardboard and chocolate frosting to hold them together.
"This is a two-rooin log cabin," said fifth-grader Sarah Edmond as she put the final touches on her cabin. "At the top is a room where the older children would have slept."

math skills such as estimating and predicting.
In the auditorium, students tested their creativity by watching a 10-minute video of songs and dances from the time period and then using the melodies of the songs to create their own lyrics and dances. In the library a history of famous Americans was portrayed by "living statues," students dressed as famous figures of the time period. When they were signaled, they "came to life" to tell their story.
In all, 23 fifth-grade classes or about 500 students participated in the event. "This event was not only fiin but provided another way for our students to understand the curriculum," added fifth-grade teacher Kerri Sparacia. "We were very pleased with the number of parents that helped with this program. Everyone involved made the day a great success."
