VIEWS ABOUT IMMIGRATION, family and the perception of wealth were shared during the first bilingual book discussion. between sixth-grade English as a second language (ESL) students from the Caroline G. Atkinson School and the" members of Freeport Memorial Library's Bilingual Book Club. Participants read the book, "Esperanza Rising," a story about a wealthy girl in Mexico who, after sudden tragedy, is forced to flee to
California, with her mother to start a new life. Atkinson ESL teacher Susan Cunnane was inspired to host the event for her students to engage them in an enriching conversation with adults who could share a different perspective on the book. High school librarian Rose Luna, who assisted with the event, said it was also a way for the district to recognize National Library Month.
