Angry and frustrated Freeporters turned out at Village Hall to let Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick know they are unhappy about his public statements urging residents to vote down the proposed Freeport School budget.
About 150 Freeporters turned up on Friday, May 14, and then again on Monday, May 17, a day before the school budget vote, in support of the proposed school budget for the upcoming year that will raise'the tax levy by 5.4% or about $300 a year, or .82 cents a day for the average homeowner in Freeport.
Ellen Frey, President of the PTA Council of Freeport, led the charge against the Mayor's call to roll back the school budget. In last week's Leader Ms. Frey wrote that the Freeport PTA units voted. unanimously to support the budget. In a telephone interview she said she and others were "protesting the mayor because he is trying to influence the residents... tovote down the budget"
Mayor Hardwick said he will not temper his statement. "The budget should be rolled back and made to address the needs of the children and the teachers, not the pockets of the administration," he said. Mayor Hardwick pointed to the economic crisis and administrative costs that were "outrageous."
Superintendent Kishore Kuncham countered that the increase is "not going into administrative pockets," as "my .superintendents have taken a pay freeze."
Debra McQuillan, President of the school board, added that the Mayor's comments are "careless remarks. We have put the budget out there. Let the community decide for itself. I beUeve the community is outraged."
Meanwhile Mayor Hardwick siiid 'They can protest till the cows come home. They [school district] should do the right thing. I'm here to stand up for the children."
"It is we who are in the business of standing up for our children," added Dr. Kuncham.
