Freeporters remember the 'Forgotten War'
The Korean Conflict 1950-1953
This Memorial Day the Freeport American Legion, William Clinton Story Post 246, led the charge to honor those Freeporters who died in Korea.
Often called the "Forgotten War," American troops were sent to Korea to help draw the line against communist aggression into South Korea by North Korea.
In 1950, most Americans supported our efforts in Korea and many World Wai n veterans went back into the service to help "keep the world safe for "democracy," including Freeporters Charlie Jackson and Arthur Weaver,
grand marshal of this year's parade -(see page 2.) Mr. Jackson, now deceased, told The Leader in 2000 that "Uncle Harry tapped me on the shoulder and I went."
While some Freeporters saw little action, others saw plenty of it, especially those in the U.S. Army infantry above the 37th parallel. One Korean veteran The Leader spoke with-talked about the intense cold, the rats, the smell of dung (human waste was used for fertilizer) and the psychological warfare used by the enemy.
Korean veterans returned home without the fanfare of the veterans
from the World Wars.
Ideological differences still exist between North and South Korea, occasionally erupting into conflict, including the recent sinking of-a South Korean ship by North Korea.
