Bethpage Students Make
Presidents' Day Count
February snows on this Presidents' Day 2011 may have found some
students home still snuggled in their beds or out shopping taking advan-tage
of special sales, but not for BHS juniors Holly Josephs and Jerry
Kim! Both students made their way through the morning snow to
Wyandanch's Mercy Inn to serve the underprivileged and emarginated a
hot lunch and smiles. Both Holly and Jerry were stationed at the coffee
and desserts while over 80 guests filed in from the cold weather out-doors
for warmth and nourishment.
Mercy INN addresses the issue of hunger and need in the
Wyandanch community, one of the most underserved on Long
Island, by providing hot, nourishing meals in a dignified, comfortable
and respectful manner to those who seek our help. Mercy Inn is an all-volunteer,
not-for-profit,' non-sectarian, community-based
organization that believes that all human beings are interdependent and
that society heals itself by caring for the least of its brethren.
Mercy INN is an affiliate of The Interfaith Nutrition Network, Inc. It
operates autonomously from that organization, maintains its own bank
accounts, and is responsible for its own income and expenses.
Mercy INN operates a single soup kitchen in Wyandanch, Long Island,
NY, serving over 25,000 free, hot noontime meals each year, Monday
through Friday to the homeless and working poor of the conununity. No
questions are asked of guests, no proselytizing, counseling or outside
publicity is permitted.
After all the grants and food donations, it costs Mercy Inn $1.50 to
serve each meal. Most of this they are able to raise through continuing
donations, but they must raise an additional $11,000 each year to
remain viable. This year in 2011, one of their initiatives will be a Walk
to Raise Money and Awareness in Suffolk County. This will be on
Sunday April 23rd in Manorville. Everyone is welcome and the walk
will be for all soup kitchens on Long Island. Checks may be made out
to Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen in Wyandanch. For further information on
this event or to find out how you can volunteer, please call Charlie
Cicio at 631-455-8989 or J. Rito at BHS 644-4100.
