A Season to be Proud of for
8th Grade SMT Boys
, 50 Cents
The 8th Grade St. Martin's Boys Basketball Team had a fine sea-son,
reaching the Quarter Finals in the CYO C Division Playoff
Bracket. After an 11-1 First Place finish this season, the Boys won
Two Playoff games before being eliminated in the Semi-Finals.
In Game 1, SMT defeated Our Lady of Victory (Floral Park) by a
score of 46-39 on our home court at Central Boulevard. It was a tight
battle, but the hallmark of this team is defense with relentless pursuit
at the top with Brandon Pellitteri, Greg Walsh, Brian Kupfer and Joey
Greco. Sam Hirsch, John Narbutt and Nick Biasi came up big on the
Boards, while Chris Tempesta plugged the middle. SMT was about 6-
8 points ahead most of the game, but OLV made a run at the end
closing the gap to about 3 points. SMT won the game down the
stretch at the free throw line with Tempesta and Walsh going a com-bined
8 for 10 in the last minute and thirty seconds.
- In Game 2, SMT was challenged by a big athletic St. Frances
(Patchogue) team. Once again, SMT set the tone with its aggressive
swarming defense from the start and jumped out to a 23 -12 Half
Time lead. The first half offense was bolstered by three jumpers from
Mike Sforza, and buckets from Tempesta, Narbutt, Kupfer, Pellitteri
and Walsh. The defensive pursuit of Joey Greco and inside play of
Biasi, Narbutt, and Sforza held St. Frances in check. St. Frances came
out with an adjustment to start the half and made a 10-2 run which
closed the gap and made it a close game. But in the fourth Q, SMT
was not to be denied. Coach Tom Pergola directed the Defense and
put a clamp on St. Frances, while Sam Hirsch came up big with four
field goals. SMT won 48-40 to advance to the Semi-Finals.
In Game 3 they faced a formidable opponent, St Hyacinth, who
was undefeated this season. SMT came all out giving it 100% effort.
They were down by 6 in the first Quarter, and only by 11 at the Half.
But St. Hyacinth was bigger and faster, and pulled away in the third
quarter defeating SMT by a score of 59-39. SMT may have lost but
walked away with their heacjs held high as they lost to a fme team,
llieir hard work resulted in a fme season for the boys.
Congratulations!

Goya Foods, Inc., the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States,
with headquarters in Bethpage, announced they are donating of one million pounds
of food in the U.S. and Puerto Rico to help fight hunger. Goya has partnered with
United Way to execute the food distribution, providing food to various food banks,
shelters, senior organizations, and schools. The donation, which consists of rice, dry
beans, and other Goya favorites, will help feed more than three million people. On
Long Island, Goya will be donating more than 75,000 pounds of food to local agen-cies
through United Way of Long Island.
Taking place on March 16—the 75th day of Goya's 75th year—the one million
pound donation is part of a series of initiatives that Goya has developed to celebrate
its milestone anniversary in 2011 and is the largest ever single-day food donation by
a food company. The historic donation serves as a reminder of Goya's service to its
communities and is the next step in Goya's longstanding commitment of supporting
the fight against hunger. Throughout its seventy-five year history, Goya has donated
extensively to local and national organizations as well as disaster recovery efforts
around the world, including providing aid to the victims of the Haiti and Chile earth-quakes.
In 2010 alone, Goya donated more than 1.5 million pounds of food interna-tionally.
Additionally, Goya announced that it will be donating more than 100,000 cans of
Goya coconut water to aid the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in
Japan. This donation will quickly help provide the victims with necessary nutrients
during these difficult times.
"Giving has always been an integral part of our culture, so as we celebrate our
75th anniversary, we wanted to give back to the communities that have always sup-ported
us," said Robert Unanue, president of Goya Foods. "At a time when millions
of Americans are facing with food insecurity, this donation reinforces our commit-ment
to aiding in the fight against hunger, so we thank United Way for helping us
execute this day of giving."
'There are more than 300,000 Long Islanders suffering from hunger," said Theresa
A. Regnante, President & CEO of United Way of Long Island. "United Way of Long
Island is incredibly grateful for this massive contribution from Goya. It will allow us
to feed even more Long Islanders by helping local food pantries, soup kitchens and
shelters expanSWir reach to serve more people."
