Long Island Harvest and National Association
of Letter Carriers Help Stamp Out Hunger
Island Harvest, Long Island's largest food bank, is joining forces with
the United States Postal Service
and the National Association of
Letter Carriers in the country's
biggest one-day food drive,
Stamp Out Hunger, to take place
on Saturday, May 14, 2011.
The campaign is simple and
encourages the community to
leave non-perishable food items
such as canned goods, pasta,
rice, boxed juices, etc., next to
their mailboxes to be picked up
by their letter carriers on
Saturday, May 14, 2011. Product
in glass containers will not be
accepted. Food collected in ~
Nassau and Suffolk counties will
help over 285,000 Long
Islanders—including 110,000
children — who face the risk of
going hungry every day.
"Stamp Out Hunger is the
easiest way in which communities and families can come together to help
address the serious problem of hunger on Long Island," said Randi
Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. "Through the com-bined
forces of the US Postal Service and the National Association of
Letter Carriers, together we can make a real difference in the lives of so
many families who rely on Island Harvest and our member agencies for
critical food support."
"The US Postal Service is proud to be part of a program that helps
those battling hunger in every community across the country," said Ken
Hale, Long Island District Manager, USPS. "We are especially pleased to
partner with Island Harvest and the NALC in addressing the critical issue
of hunger right here on Long Island."
"The Annual Letter Carrier Food Drive provides help and hope for the
needs of children, seniors and the working poor who live on Long Island,"
said Walter Barton, president National Association of Letter Carriers,
Long Island Merged Branch 6000. "It is the good deeds of the entire com-munity
on this one day of the year that brings us together in a common
cause. Thank you for your generosity."
Donations of non-perishable items can also be brought directly to
Ipcal post offices, with the exception of products in glass containers. For
