^lainedge Student Named Winner in
Agenda Cover Design Contesi
Plainedge High School junior Ashiey Loonam was named the win-ner
of the school's agenda cover design contest. She is pictured
here receiving a $25 check from social studies coordinator David
Pearlman, courtesy of the PTSA and Principal Robert Amster, who
is displaying her winning design.
Plainedge High School students recently showcased their outstanding
creativity when they participated in a schoolwide 2011-2012 student
agenda cover contest. The designs each showcased the student-artists'
Plainedge Pride and were excellent representations of the school's col-lective
artistic talent base.
The contest was organized by social studies coordinator David
Pearlman. Members of the school staff judged submissions, and the stu-dents'
peers judged the top three finalists using the computer program
Tapestry. Students were encouraged to vote while visiting the library with
the assistance of librarian Catherine Vidal.
Plainedge junior Ashley Loonam was named the winner of the com-petition.
Her original design will be replicated on the cover of next school
year's high school agenda.

3ethpage School District Thanks
Residents for Sumrt of Budget
The Bethpage Board of Education and Central
Administration would like to thank the community for vot-ing
in support of the 2011-2012 School District Budget
on May 17. This budget, which represents one of the
lowest budget-to-budget increases in 20 years and one
of the lowest budget increases in Nassau County, main-tains
all preexisting programs and will enable the District
to provide resources necessary to help students suc-ceed.
The Board and Administration collaborated with the
Citizen's Budget Advisory Committee to develop a budg-et
that meets instructional needs in a financially respon-sible
manner. Savings were achieved in several areas,
the most prominent being personnel costs. Also impor-tant
to note is collaborative bargaining between the
District and teachers union, which, along with some
retirements, have'resulted in' an additional savings of
about $1 million.
The 2011-2012 budget preserves class sizes, all
clubs and extracurricular activities, full day kindergarten,
and supports many more components of the educational
program including elementary summer school, Saturday
Academic Intervention Services, the K-12 Inclusion
Program, the 21st Century Scholars' Program, the TGIF
program, robotics, artist-in-residence opportunities, and
the student transportation mileage poHcy. The budget will
further enhance the current instructional program by pro-viding
SMARTBoards for elementary classes, staff devel-opment
initiatives, technology upgrades, and District
summer school for special needs students.
"On behalf of the Bethpage School District, I extend
our thanks to all the residents who came out to vote and,
in doing so, have helped play an important role in stu-dents'
education," stated Superintendent of Schools Mr.
Terrence Clark. "The proposed budget balances the
needs of all our students with those of the taxpayers and
the community,"
Also up for vote was a Proposition Two authorizing
the District to spend $500,000 from the Capital Reserve
Fund for the purpose of bringing natural gas into the ele-mentary
and middle schools as a heating source. This
proposition, which will not raise taxes and will substan-tially
reduce future energy costs, was also passed by
voters.
The evening of the budget vote also featured
Democracy in Action musical and artistic performances
from students representing each of the District's schools,
held in the High School's auxiliary gymnasium, A book
sale and art show provided additional educational enter-tainment
and refreshments were available thanks to a
bake sale.
