Village Board Reports Chimney Causes House Fire
East Rockaway
The November meeting of
the East Rockaway Village
Board was called to order at
8:30 pm at the Village Hall
on Monday, November 14.
After the approval of the
minutes for the meetings of
October 3 and 5, the Board
heard reports from the
Mayor, Trustees, Village
Attorney, Fire and Auxil-iary
Police Departments,
Public Works, Building and
Recreation Departments,
Library, and Justice Court.
The Mayor made four
p r e s e n t a t i o n s . Arthur
"Harry" Cordingly was cited
for this thirty years of out-standing
service to the Vil-lage
of East Rockaway.
Anthony Vitta, Marie
Urbano and Anthony
Urbano were cited for their
efforts above and beyond
the call of duty in assisting
their neighbors, the Limon-cellis,
during the recent fire
that consumed their house.
The Mayor stated that their
acts of voluntarism were to
be praised and commended
by all.
Mayor Reinhard then
read a proclamation where-by
the years 1983 through
1992 were declared to be the
"Decade of the Disabled" by
the Village of East Rocka-way.
This proclamation is in
accordance with a similar
resolution passed by the
United Nations in recogni-tion
of the plight of the han-dicapped
worldwide.
The Board dispensed with
various pending matters.
The Board granted permis-sion
to the Kiwanis Club to
hold their annual Rag-A-Muffin
Parade on Thanks-giving
morning. It also
approved the request by the
Peninsulua Counseling Cen-ter
to renovate the reception
area of its Main Street
office, and amended Article

On October 30, 1983, the
Lynbrook Fire Department
responded to a general
alarm house fire at 149 Can-itebury
Gate off Bixley
Heath. Tally-Ho Engine 3,
first on the scene, found fire
in the wall immediately
adjacent to the chimney. A
1 Vi hose line was brought to
the second floor of the resi-dence
while an additional
exterior line was brought to
the chimney side of the
house. With the assistance
of Truck Company and
members of other fire units
that responded the burning
wall area near the chimney
was pulled and the fire
extinguished.
Chief Kevin Michaud,
\vhose men were on the
scene for one hour, attrib-uted
the fire to loose
unsealed bricks in the chim-neys
which ignited the inte-rior
wall.
Chief Michaud asks all
residents to check their own
chimney to make sure they
are properly sealed.
