Observer Contest
Winners Chosen
Jimmy Babst ol Rhame
Avenue School and Jennifer
Qui-nn of Centre Avenue
School have been chosen as
t h e w i n n e r s ol the
Observer's 1984 "Mother's
Day Contest."
Each child submitted a
letter to the Observer on
"Why My Mom is the Great-est."
Jimmy's and Jennifer's
letters were chosen as the
best from all entries
received.
Each student won a var-iety
of prizes for his/her
mother for Mother's Day.
Jimmy won a free lunch with
his mother at Metro Restau-rant
on Merrick Road, Lyn-brook;
a complimentary cut
and blow for Mom at Total

Road, Valley Stream,

complimentary lunch with
Mom at Fortuna Seafood
House, located on Merrick
Road in Lynbrook, as well
as the cut and blow, pastries
and portrait.
Mrs. Theresa Babst and
Mrs. Katherine Quinn, the
lucky mothers of Jimmy and-
Jennifer, were notified of
their child's achievement on
Friday, May 11 in time for a
special Mother's Day. "It's
the best Mother's Day pres-ent
we could have received,"
both mothers exclaimed.

Grace Conry Elected
ERA President
The East Rockaway
Action (ERA) Party Board
of Directors met on May 10
for the purpose of filling the
vacancy created by the
appointment of former
ERA President James Roo-ney
as Acting Village Jus-tice.
The Board elected Mrs.
Grace Conry as President of
the ERA Parly and Mr.
GOP Annual Observer Exclusive
Spring Dance
Everett Janes as Vice Presi-dent.
Mrs. Cathy Rooney
was elected to the ERA
Board of Directors.
The next membership
meeting of the ERA Party
will be held on Monday,
May 21 at the Grant Avenue
Firehouse. All residents of
the Village of East Rocka-way
are invited to attend.
East Rockaway Republi-can
Leader Phil Christ has
announced that the Annual
Spring Dance of the East
Rockaway Republican Club
will be held on Sunday, May
20th from 2 to 6 p.m. at the
Hewlett Point Yacht Club.
Tickets to this affair,
which will honor State
Senate candidate Dean Ske-los
and East Rockaway's
own Congressman Norm
Lent, are priced at just $20
per person. Included with
the price of admission are an
open bar, a hot and cold
buffet, and the music of
"Jimmy Downs"^

East Rockaway Village Board Report
This year for the first time
a "Festival of the Arts" is
planned during the annual
L y n b r o o k Week gala
celebration.
On Sunday, June 17,
1984, from 12 noon to 6 PM
a "Festival of the Arts" will
be held in the village shop-ping
area on Atlantic
Avenue. Atlantic Avenue,
between Sunrise Highway
and Merrick Road, as well
as Staudermann Avenue,
will be closed to vehicular
traffic and will become a

tellers who used to give out
and take money from
behind counters there. In the
early nineteen hundreds the
first East Rockaway bank
was established there. Bars
on the windows against
robbers are still in place
today. Those who did not
trust the new bank had safes

of the Village of East
Rockaway met on Monday,
May Mat the Village Hall at
8:30 pm.
The Board approved a
request from residents of
Wilson Street to hold a
block party on Sunday,
June 10 from 11 am to 9 pm
and waived all requirements
and fees. In addition, the
Board approved a request
f rom American Legion Post
#958 to sell Poppy's during
the month of May on the
streets of the Village. Pro-ceeds
go to assist disabled
veterans.

Works Week" the month of
May as Better Hearing arid
Speech Month, and June 14

The Board authorized the
Mayor to enter into a con-tract

his Grist Mill. That very safe
is on display in the Davison
"office" in the Museum. The
larger edifice of the East
Rockaway National Bank
and Trust Company (now
the National Westminster
Bank), was built diagonally
across Main Street from the
old one. Mr. Helfrich was
one of their first presidents.

Beautifying Lynbrook
BEAUTIFICATION DAY. On Saturday, April 28th, the
Village of Lynbrook held their annual Beautification Day
with the sweeping of Atlantic Avenue by Village Officials
and a tour through the streets of the village. During the tour
donated plants and fertilizer were distributed to home
owners found beautifying their residences. Doing a clean
sweep of AtlaYitic Avenue are, from left to right, Mary Ann
Hughes, secretary to the Mayor; Peter Ledwith, Trustee;
Mayor William P. Geier; Eugene Scarpato, Trustee; Dean
Skelos, Republican candidate for the New York State
Senate; aitd Stephen Grogan, Director of Public Relations.
Mannie Messing, Assistant to the Village Board, is shown in
the rear. The Geier, Ledwith and Hughes' children also
