A petition to expand the
size of the East Rockaway
Board of Education from
five to seven members has
been withdrawn by its spon-sor,
Richard J. Meagher,
current Board President.
"I believe that a seven-member
Board would be
,able to do more for the dis-trict,
at the same time that it
would provide greater diver-sity
of opinion and hope-fully
be even more represen-t
a t i v e of the t o t al
community than a five-member
Board can," said
Meagher. "But this year,
with four new members to
be elected in June, is simply
the wrong year."
If not withdrawn by its
sponsor, the petition would
have resulted in a proposi-tion
to so expand the Board
being included on the ballot
on June 12. "I expect to'"
submit a new petition in the

Mr. William Cusick ol
Hewlett Point Avenue, East
Rockaway has announced
that he will seek election to
the East Rockaway Board of
Education on Tuesday, June
12.
As a resident for the last
12 y e a r s , Mr. Cusick
believes that he has a tho-rough
understanding of the
problems facing the school
district and its residents.
"We're an older community,
and we have to realize that
we can't have everything we
want, because we aren't able
to pay for it. There has to be
some balance between the
things we need and our abil-ity
to pay for them.
"1 would suggest that we
model our School Board in a
business-like lashion. 1
would appoint committees
of concerned area residents
to study the problems that
we as a community lace and
have them report batk to the
Board for consideration. I
would also like to utilize the
senior citizens of our com-munity
in an effort to bring
some ol their expertise to
East Rockaway. They have
a lot to offer us; we should
not turn our backs on their
assistance."
William Cusick believes
that there must be a measure
of fiscal responsibility on the
Board. "The $10.4 million
bond proposal was ridicu-lous.
Wejust couldn't afford
that much money. Senior

Issue Joint Statement
This is a joint statement
from John Van Houten and
Elaine Boll, candidate for
the Board of Education.
"We believe that this year,,
more than ever before, the
constituents of East Rocka-way
School District have a
grave responsibility. Only
one experienced School
Board member remains, Mr.
Richard Meagher. There-fore,
members to be elected
to the Board must have
extraordinary and varied
qualifications to help Dick
build a school district of
which we can be proud and a
Board which will help us get
the most for our tax
dollars."
Elaine Boll made the fol-lowing
statement
