Fire Department Chief Wil-liam
P. Hummel passed
away on Saturday, Sep-tember
22.
Chief Hummel, a resident
of East Rockaway for more
than 63 years, is survived by
his wife, Elizabeth, sons
Peter and John, and grand-children
Virginia, William,
Barbara, Michael and Chris-topher.
Funeral arrange-ments
were made by Donza
Funeral Home of East
Rockaway.
Chief Hummel has been a
dedicated and active
member of the East Rocka-way
Fire Department since
joining the Liberty Hose
Company in March, 1933.
He will be sorely missed by
all.
In addition to the events
reported in last week's issue
of the Observer, the East
Rockaway Board of Educa-tion
concluded other busi-ness
at its September 17
meeting.
The Board approved the
following personnel mat-ters:
approved the hiring of
Robert Rogers as principal
of Centre Avenue School.
Mr. Rogers is formerly of
the Baldwin school district
and says that he is "very anx-ious
to get started." The
Board approved the hiring
of Helen McNally as speech
therapist, Theresa Timony
as Spanish/Italian teacher,
Eileen Kaloudis as psychol-ogist,
Nancy Foders as

Teacher Aide, Adrienne

as library aide, and Gail
Wuest as High School
mathematics teacher. In
addition, the Board granted
a leave of absence to Phyllis
Campbell, speech therapist,
and Diane Bondi, special
Seagull Classic Run
Pretty Miss Kristina
Helene Lanning, daughter
of Gregory and Barbara
Lanning of Lynbrook, has
been chosen Lynbrook Teen
Miss 1984.
She represented the area
in the official state finals
held Sunday, Sept. 2nd, at
the Americana Inn in
Albany where she competed
with other area finalists in
coinmunications, evening
gown and interview compe-titions
for the state title and
crown of N.Y. Teen Miss;
plus, a $1,000 cash scholar-ship
award. She was one of
the top ten finalists.
Kristina is a senior at St.
Agnes Cathedral where she
was a member of the Drama
Club and served as a cheer-leader
during her freshman
and sophomore years. She is
a three-year member of the
student council. Her ambi-tion
for after graduation is
to enter the world of
Fashion Merchandising and
Coordination. Her special
interests include her hobbies
of drawing, reading, danc-ing,
boating and .working
with elderly.
Goergc Burns and Linda
Evans heads Kristina's list of
favorite famous people, with
Dynasty receiving her vote
for best TV show, red is her
favorite color, seafood her
favorite food, and dancing
tops her list of favorite
activities.
Sociable and sensitive
Kristina is 17 years of age,
has light brown hair, hazel
eyes, is 5'VA" tall and weighs
107 pounds. She will serve as
Lynbrook Teen Miss for one
year during which time she
plans to be active in com-munity
aflairs. Her proud
sponsors are Mr. C. Mario
Vitelli, Lynbrook, Hansel &
Gretel Shop, Lynbrook, Mr.
and Mrs. J. Kroll, Freeport,
and Charles Gruhn, Cabi-netmaker,
Hewlett.
The "SEAGULL CLAS-SIC'S
Kilometer (3.1 Miles)
run will be held on Sunday,
October 14th in the Bay
Park area of East Rockaway.
This race, which is open to
all age groups, is part of
St. Raymond's R.C. Church
75th Jubilee celebration
which has taken place
throughout 1984.
The race will start at 9:30

To Wed
Mr. and Mrs. James Guy
Pratt of Garden City are
pleased to announce the
engagement of their daugh-ter
Cathleen Ann to Mr.
Joseph M. Williams Jr., son
of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M.
Williams of East Rockaway.
Miss Pratt attended Holy
Child High School in Old
Westbury and received her
B.A. in Economics from
Fairfield University in 1983.
She is presently employed
with the New York Stock
Exchange Member Firm of
Corroon, Lichtenstein and
Co.
Mr. Williams attended
Chaminade High School in
Mineola and received a B.E.
in Chemical Engineering
from Manhattan Colege,
Riverdale, NY. He is pres-ently
employed as a Consult-ing
Engineer with Pratt
Industries.
A June wedding is
planned.
AM at Bay Park and will be
timed by "Start to Finish
Corp.". Prizes will be
awarded to the Top 3 fin-ishers
overall (Male &
Female), the Top 3 Teams
and the Top 3 finishers
(Male & Female) in age
groups beginning with " 12 &
Under" through "60 &
Over". Special awards will
be presented to the East
Rockaway residents (Male
& Female) with the best
time.

Saying "thank-you" to
Rep, Norman F. Lent is
young Joanna Soporowski
and her mother and father,
Mr. and Mrs. Andrezj
Soporowski of Freeport,
,New York, at the recent
Grand Opening of the Lent
for Congress Re-election
Headquarters. It was Con-gressman
Lent who made it
possible for Joanna to leave
Poland and join her mother
and father in the United
States after a five year sepa-ration
imposed by a techni-cality
iir U.S. immigration
law.
When the recent death of
Joanna's sole guardian in
Poland made it imperative
that the child be reunited
with her family, Mr. and
Mrs. Soporowski turned to
Congressman Lent for
assistance. Lent promptly
contacted the appropriate
U.S. immigration officials
and procured for Joanna a
special six month parole to
enter the United States.
Post race fun will con-tinue
at Bay Park with
refreshments and raffles of
over 100 great prizes includ-ing
sportswear, sporting
equipment, NY Islander
tickets, "Dinner-for-Two"
at the East Point Inn.
Entry forms are available
now at Olympic Village
sports shops (Registration
fee is $6). Be sure to sign up
for this great race and the

Joanna presented Con-gressman
Lent with a minia-ture
doll, brought with her
from her native Poland, as a
token of her thanks and
appreciation for his efforts
education teacher. The
Board authorized the Super-intendent
to seek a 3/5
resource room teacher for
the high school and a full-time
business administrator
at a salary of $40,000 plus,
commensurate with expe-rience.
