"Occasional rain and
some sunshine was pre-dicted
by our Big Huckleb-erry
Frolic Day. The "mini"
parade began with hazy sun-shine;
then cleared, and the
Frolic was underway. Soon
the savory scent of ham-burgers,
chili, and sausage
heroes was watted by the
gentle breeze. A variety of
games started, including a
dunk tank that our good-sport
mayor Irving Shaw
took a plunge into. Lines
formed up for the pony ride
and other games that the
youngsters took part in
while the parents munched
away and visited the
Museum.
It was truly a gala day .
The bands were all outstand-ing,
none ear shattering and
'the dancers and singers
intriguing. A bouquet goes
to Ellie Sussman of Centre
Avenue School for her stu-dent's
excellent performan-ces.
Once or twice clouds

rolled and there was news of
rain in surrounding area-s...
especially as the ever
popular Mummers were
scheduled to appear this
year at 7 instead of 8 p.m.
They gave their usual spar-kling
performance and as
they strutted their last
"strut" raindrops fell as the
raffle chances were pulled.
Winners of the first prize
VCR was C. Hamilton of
West Boulevard. "Dinner
for two" gift certificates
were won by B. Jonassen of
Waldo Ave. (East Point

E. Fulton St. (Ship's Inn),
and J. Calli of Valley Stream

Special thanks were
extended to the 1987

Due to the substantial
increase in the number of
parking violations through-out
the Village, it was
resolved that the hourly
salary for the Parking
Enforcement Officers be
increased to $5.50 per hour
and said increase to be effec-tive
June 1, 1987. It was the
unanimous concensus of the
Board of Trustees that the
Parking Enforcement Offic-ers
of the Village of East
Rockaway be compensated
for this increased activity.
Resolution passed to the
effect that the offices of the
Incorporated Village of East.
Rockaway be closed on
Monday, July 6, 1987, in
recognition of the inde-pendence
Day holiday.
Upon careful considera-tion,
and review of sealed
bid proposals. Mayor Irving
Shaw was authorized by the
Board of Trustees to sign a
contract with Trison Con-tracting
for the improve-ments
to Ox Bow Park.

to more efficiently continue
the orderly procedure of the
said department was

Alumni Association Notes
The final meeting of the
East Rockaway High
School Alumni Association
for 1986-1987 was held on
June 3 at the high school and
focused on plans for Home-coming
next fall, with Sat-urday,
November 7, tenta-tively
identified as the date,
according to Ed Carey,
Alumni Chairperson for
Homecoming.
T r u s t e e Ed Power
reported that Harry Runa-cres
had agreed to serve as
Class Representative for the
Class of 1946, bringing to 35
the number of classes so
represented.
Treasurer Elaine Boll
submitted a budget review
through June 3 indicating
income of $6,800 had been
received against projected
income of $4,600, and
expenses of $3,026 had been
incurred against projected
expenses of $3,600. A
budget Committee was
authorized to being plan-ning
for 1987-1988.
Boll also submitted her
monthly Treasurer's report
which indicated a paid
membership of 621 and a
cash balance on hand as of
June 3 of $8,347.72.
In other actions, the
Association approved the
minutes of the May 6 meet-ing
as presented by Record-ing
Secretary Janice Sand-ers
and adopted the
following schedule of meet-ings
for 1987-1988, as pres-ented
by Corresponding
Secretary Paula DePietro:
September 9, October 7,
Novembr 4, December 2,
January 6, February 3,
March 2, April 13, May 4,
June 1. All meetings are on
Wednesday evenings at 7:30
p.m. in the Music Room at
the high school.
A lively discussion was
held on the topic of potential
Spring 1988 aliimni activi-ties.
A potential show/-
pageant celebrating the
300th Anniversary of the
Grist Mill and our local his-t
o ^ , as outlined by Mrs.
Mildred Roemer in a guest
presentation earlier in the
spring, was presented by
Trustee Ed Power as an
important event for alumni
to participate in. Several
alumni spoke in favor of the
"Futures" Committee sug-gestion
for a June (or July)
gathering at the "mush-rooms"
at Lido Beach.
Association president
Richard J. Meagher sug-gested
that the two propos-als
were not mutually exclu-sive,
and that, while the
Alumni Association should
be careful not to over-extend
itself, separate
groups of alumni might be
attracted to work on each
project, particularly if the
show/pageant was in April
and the other event was in
June or July. Further dis-cussion
on these ideas is
scheduled for September.
A consensus was reached,
however, that a third prop-osal,
for a faculty tribute/-
roast, be postponed to
another year while research
on the whereabouts of
retired faculty is conducted
and script ideas are
developed.
Trustee Betty Johnston
proposed that two elemen-tary
school age children
from the district be sent to
camp next summer by the
Association. She and New-sletter
Editor John Hambel
will research this potential
project and report back in
September.
