Homecoming festivities
The perfect Homecoming
began with sunrise on
November?, 1987. A beauti-ful
fall day unfolded to set
the scene at Hermanson
Field at East Rockaway
High School as" the Rocks
crushed Manhasset, 30-0,
before an enthusiastic crowd
of students, parents, alumni,
teachers, staff, and other
supportersfor their fourth win
of the season. Many dona-tions
were made to the Louis
Cosenza Memorial Fund by
those in attendance.
On the field the Rocks'
defense recorded their third
shutout, while the offense
bulled their way down the
field for five touchdowns,
the last of which was thril-ling
99-yard interception
return by Russell Pajer.
Pajer ran for two other TD's
and hit Jimmy O'Hagan
with a 60-yard bomb for yet
another score. Dan Vito had
scored the Rocks' first TD
on a five-yard run in the
second quarter.
As night began to fall, the
older Rocks came out to
play, with the scene shifting
to the newly renovated Main
Street Firehouseforthe East
Rockaway High School
A l u m n i A s s o c i a t i o n 's
Second Annual Homecom-ing
Celebration.
Nearly 170 Rocks of all
ages filled the Firehouse
with a fever best captured by
the memory of the crowded
dance floor and "We Are
Family" bouncing off the
walls from the more-than-ample
amplifiers of Dee-Jay
Ed the Head. The only sepa-ration
of the generations
occurred as natural laws
governed the first-come.
first-served seating arran-gements
with older alumni
seeking distance from the
amplifiers and younger
'alumni wanting to get as
close to the music as
possible.
In the brief formal cerem-onies,
Alumni Association
President Richard J. Mea-gher
welcomed the attendees
and thanked East Rocka-way
Fire Department, Inc.
for permitting the alumni to
h o l d the f i r s t p o s t -
renovation event in their
fine hall. Meagher added
that the Alumni Association
is working, under Trustee
Ed Power's direction, on an
April 1988 Pageant/Show
commemorating the 300th
Anniversary of the East
Rockaway Grist Mill and
asked alumni interested in
performing to sign up at the
membership table.
Meagher then announced
that the winner of the 1987
"Alumnus of the Year"
Award, given for outstand-ing
service to the Associa-tion,
was Robert Jacobsen,
Class 1958.
Jacobsen, dubbed "The
Meticulous One", was cited
for his dedication and lead-ership
in computerizing the
alumni data base and for the
long-term planning role he
undertook as chairman of
the Association's "Futures"
Committee. Jacobsen, who
has taught mathematics for
a quarterof a century in a
neighboring school district,
where he also serves as a
math department chairman,
was joined by his wife Seena
and their two sons. Marc,
and Peter, as he accepted his

Move To Broaden Party
Prompts ERA Contest
For the second time in
two years, c a n d i d a t es
selected by the nominating
committee of the East
Rockaway Action Party are
being challenged by ERA
members who have offered
to open the Party to new
leadership.
Action party meetings are
traditionally sedate affairs,
with generally the same
group of people in attend-ance.
When the Party con-vened
on Monday, Novem-ber
16 to receive the report
of the nominating commit-tee
tor President and Vice
President, the Grant Avenue
Firehouse was filled with
many newer faces.
Chairman Denis Moth-erway
reported that the
committee was recommend-ing
the nominations of
incumbent President Mur-ray
Eskinazi and incumbent
Vice President Rita Van
Buren for third consecutive
terms. When nominations
f r o m t h e f l o o r were
requested. Frank Honer-"
kamp placed in nomination
the names of William Kelle-her
for President and Mar-tin
Evans for Vice President.
Club members will choose
between the two slates at a
meeting to be held on Mon-day,
December 7 at 8:30 pm
in the Grant Avenue
Firehouse.

Committee Monday even-ingwere
Sandra Torborg,
Secretary; John Roberts,
Treasur,er; and to the Board
of Directors Eugene Tor-borg,
Kevin McNulty, Peter
Hart, Theodore Reinhard,
Michael Mullin.and Robert
McTague. No opposing
candidates were nominated
from the floor.

Lynbrook GOP Enjoys
Plurality
Lynbrook Republican

the turnout was low, as

Thanksgiving, 1900
by Mildred Roemer
The savory smell of good
cooking wafted through the
large homes on Main Street
and fishermen's shacks on
Ocean Avenue in East
Rockaway when the day to
give Thanks came around
in early 1900. We can
assume that turkey and
goose would be brought to a
candlelite table, aglow with
silver and fine china, while
just as delicious but with
lesser pomp, a wild, black
duck would grace a simple
platter.
On a tape sent to the Grist
Mill Museum frqm Florida
> quite a while back from
Edwin W. White, (of the
White family) he mentioned
the black duck, shot in the
marshlands by the father in
the house. Along with the
duck, potatoes, parsnips
and turnips were served,
along with applesauce,
home made preserves, home
churned butter and wonder-ful
home made bread. Both
feasts started with the (now
expensive) oysters or clams
(Continued on Page 4)
with better than eight per-cent
(80%) of the vote. Fol-lowing
a close second and
third were Hempstead Town
P r e s i d i n g S u p e r v i s or
Joseph Mondello, and
Hempstead Town Supervi-sor
Gregory Peterson each
finishing with close to
seventy-five percent (75%)
of the vote.
"Once again Lynbrook
voters have demonstrated
their support of our fine
Town and County leader-ship
who have made our
standard of living in this
County second to none in
New York State" stated Mr.
Becker. "This is a tribute to
the quality of our candi-dates,
committeewomen
throughout the campaign."
The Lynbrook Republi-can
Club will be holding its
next meeting on Wednes-day,
December 2, 1987, at
the American Legion Club-house,
134 Union Avenue,
L y n b r o o k b e g i n n i ng
promptly at 8:00 p.m.
Members of the public are
cordially invited to attend.
NOW THAT'S A PARTY! East Rockaway High School
alumnae cheerleaders kick up their heels once again at the
November 7, 1987 Homecoming Celebration of the ERHS
Alumni Association, which was held at the Main Street
