Board Rescinds Collection Change
IN RECOGNITION. At the February Open School Board
meeting. Sister Ruthanne Gypalo, INM, Principal of Saint
Raymond School accepts a Certificate of Appreciation for
the many contributions the school has made to the develop-ment
of the youth of East Rockaway, from John Stender
representing Mayor Irving Shaw and the Village of East
Rockaway.

Board has voted to rescind
the proposal lor an annual
tax collection and will seek
the public's input as to
whether or not the change
should be implemented in
the future. The tax collec-tion
question is one of seven
to be included in a questio-naire
that will be distributed
to every resident within the
next several months.

Mrs. Ortiz began her
financial career with Sav-ings
of America in 1984, as a
Savings Counselor in their
Rockaway Turnpike, Law-rence
Branch. She was sub-sequently
promoted to the
position of Operations
Officer in their New Hyde
Branch and later held that
p o s i t i o n in Rockaway
T u r n p i k e , where she
remained until 1987 when
she was selected to enter
Savings of America's Man-agement
Training Program.
Mrs. Ortiz is a lifelong res-ident
of Inwood, New York,
where she currently lives
with her husband, Jose'and
their two sons.

of the nation's largest sav-ings
and loans, with assets in
excess of $36 billion and
deposits of $27 billion,
larger than that of any other
savings institution in the
country. It operates 346 sav-

300th celebration of the
Grist Mill. Don wrote that
he will be tied up with a golf
tournament between the 8th
and 12th of June, but should
be here for the Big Frolic on
June 18th. Unfortunately,
he will not be here for the
High Schools' Alumni play,
but will be meeting many of
the actors.
The Murray family—Ethel
and Dennis Murray, and
their three children, Wil-liam,
Don, and Ethel—lived
on West Boulevard. Don
attended Rhame Avenue
School and when in the 6th
grade took part as a young
Pilgrim in his mother's now
famous pageant, "The His-tory
of East Rockaway." He
was introduced to tap danc-ing
and a bit of show busi-ness
at the LeRoy Dancing
School in Lynbrook, He was
in many plays and skits at
Rhame Avenue School and,
naturally, took part in the
H i g h S c h o o l s Rock
Rivalry.

the Monday, March 7, 1988,
meeting of the Board. "The
members and I have a man-date
to carry out the wishes
of the taxpayers, and it is for
this reason that we are seek-ing
their counsel and advice
on this very important
question."
Geier noted that the orig-inal
proposal came in
response to an economic
emergency which is facing
local governments across
Long Island and throughout
New York State. "The dras-tic
increases in health insu-rance
and garbage removal
costs, together with the
dramatic loss of revenue
sharing for Villages, has
created an economic short-fall
which, according to
Newsday, is approaching
critical proportions," Geier
said. "The ^oard believed
-the change in tax collection
to be the most fiscally pru-dent
manner in which to
meet the burdens facsed by
municipalities everywhere.
However, 1 believe the pub-lic
should be consulted prior
to implementing such a
change."
Within the next several
months, the Village will be
distributing a questionaire
to every resident of Lyn-brook,
seeking their advice
on several issues that the
Board will be confronting.
In an effort to receive the
best possible services at the
lowest possible cost, resi-dents
will be asked to assign
prioities among the follow-ing
issues:
* A systematic, long term
program for the improve-ment
of Lynbrook's infras-tructure,
including the gen-eral
repair and resurfacing
of roadwys within the
Village.
* The revitalization of the
downtown business district,
from the High School north
along Atlantic Avenue to

Good Government Night
Mayor Irving F. Shaw is
pleased to announce that
March 14, 1988 will be Girl
Scouts Good Government
Day in the Village of East
Rockaway. The Board of
Trustees regular meeting on
the night of March I4th will
feature participation by the
Girl Scouts Troop 4007,
Junior Troop 2282 and
Brownie Troops 2072 and
2092 in the proceedings. The
