Board Takes Action To Curb Illegal Rentals
Stating that the time
has come to stop the
illegal development of
Lynbrook through the
rental of illegal multi-family
dwellings, Mayor
William P. Geier and the
Village Board have
adopted a local law that
imposes stiff fines on
realtors who advertise
residences that are not
in compliance with zon-ing
regulations.
"The action we are
taking today will send a
clear message to those
realtors who openly
flout the law: the rent-ing
of illegal apartments
will not be tolerated,"
stated Mayor Geier in
announcing the dec-ision.
"Anyone who at-tempts
to circumvent
the law by advertising
illegal multi-family units
will find that it is no
longer economically fea-sible
to do so."
The new local law,
which was adopted at
the conclusion of a
public hearing on Mon-day,
September 19,
1988, sets fines of as
much as $250 or 15 days
in jail for each days'*
continued violation of
the Village Code.
"The Board has
consistently implemen-ted
zoning reg-ulations
that maintain the
suburban quality of life
in Lynbrook," Mayor
Geier continued. "Un-fortunately,
some indiv-iduals
place profit over^
the well-being of the'
residents of our Vil-lage-
Trustee Steven T.
Grogan, who led the
fight on the Board to
adopt these strict pen-alties.
stated "Every
vyeek the newspapers
publish classified adver-tisements
for residences
tha^t are clearly im-properly
zoned. By
imposing severe fin-ancial
penalties - and
the threat of jail - we
can ensure that the
Village zoning laws are
being adhered to by
everyone in Lynbrook."
The local law goes
into effect immediately
as prescribed by law.
