Hofstra University will
award honorary degrees to
Roger W. Straus, Jr.,
founder of Farrar, Straus
and Giroux; Galway Kin-nell,
the Pulitzer Prize-winning
poet; John P.
Roche, the political scientist
and former Presidential
advisor; and Norman F.
Lent, Jr., U.S. Congr^sman
from the Fourth District,
Long Island.
The degrees will be
awarded at Hofstra Univer-sity's
mid-year commence-ment
exercises, which begin
at noon on Sunday,
December 18, at the campus
in Hempstead.
Mr. Straus and Mr. Kin-nell
will be honored at the
undergraduate commence-ment
at noon in Hofstra's
Physical Fitness Center. Mr.
Straus is the founder, Presi-dent
and Oiief Executive
Officer of the publishing
firm of Farrar, Straus and
Giroux, Inc., a smidl, inde-pendent
press noted for its
meticulous handlin|; of liter-ary
properties and its stellar
list of authors, which
includes 15 Nobel Laureates.
A New York City native,
Mr. Straus attended Hamil-ton
College and graduated
with a Bachelor of Journal-ism
degn^ from the Univer-sity
of Missouri. Early in his
career he wrote for the White
Plains Daily Reporter and
the Columbia Missourian.
He was later Associate Edi-tor
of Current History and
Forum magazines and Pres-ident
of Book Ideas. He
founded FSG in 1945. Mr.
Straus has served as Chair-man
of the Advisory Board
of American Judaism and is
currently a director of the
University of Missouri
Press. He sits on the Boards
of the Harry Frank Guggen-heim
Foundation and the
John Simon Guggenheim
Foundation. He is the
author of War Letters from
Britain (1941), and co-editor
of The Sixth Column (1941).
Galway Kinnell holds an
A.B. decree from Princeton
University and an M.A.
from the University of
Rochester. He is the Samuel
F.B. Morse Professor of
Arts and Sciences at New
York University. His books
of poetry include What a
Kingdom it Was (1960),
Flower Herding on Mount
Monadeck (1964), Body
Rags (1%8), First Poems
(1971), The Book of Night-mares
(1971), The Avenue
Bearing the Initial of Christ
into the New World (1974),
Mortal Acts, Mortal Words
(1980) and The Past (1985).
He is a translator of the
poems of Francois Villon
£md editor of The Essential
Whitman. Mr. Kinnell has
been a Gugganheim Fellow
and a MacArthur Fellow. In
addition to the Pulitzer
Prize, he has received the
National Institute of Arts
and Letters Award, Medd
of Merit, the Longview
Foundation Award, the
Amy Lowell traveling
schlarship, the Cecil Hemley
Poetry Prize, the Brandeis
University Creative Arts
Award and the American
Book Award as well as a
Rockefeller Foundation
Grant.
Mr. Roche and Mr. Lent
will be honored at the grad-uate
commencement at 3
p.m. in Hofstrals Physical
Fitness Center. Mr. Lent is
a member of the Hofstra
University Class of 1952. He
recently won reelection to
his ninth term representing
the Fourth District on Long
Island, which includes Levit-town,
much of Central Nas-,
sau County and the south
shore from East Rockaway
of Massapequa. Born in
Oceanside, Mr. Lent earned
his Bachelor of Science
degree at Hofstra and stu-d
i ^ law at Cornell Univer-sity.
He was a practicing
attorney on Long Island
from 1957-1970 and served
eight years as a New York
State Senator before being
elected to C o n ^ s s in 1970.
Throughout his tenure in
Washington, Mr. Lent has
been a proponent of aid to
education at all levels. H;. lo

gala New Year's Eve
Party on Saturday, Dec-ember
31 from 9 pm to 2
am in 1989.
The place will be the
classical Colonial Room,
located at 71 Main
Street, East Rockaway.
You will be treated to
cold cuts, ante pasto,
fresh ham and turkey
dinners, including pota-toes,
carrots and peas,
salad, rolls, coffee,
demitasse, tea, sam-bucca,
anisette, special
cookies and fresh fruit.
In addition, there
will be an open bar,
balloons, party favors,
and dancing to the
music of the Pulsations
Orchestra.
All proceeds will
help fund the many
charitable activities of
the East Rockaway Am-erican
Legion.

MURAL COMPLETED. East Rockaway High School Art m Mr. Bishop's Drawing and Painting class. The painting
teacher, Jolin Bishop, recently had a mural of the village depicts the Village of East Rockaway in eariiers times
completed. The mural, which was begun four years ago, reminding students and visitors in the front hall of their
finally had its third part completed last spring by students history.

Bachelor of Arts degree at
Hofstra in 1943 and his
Master of Arts and Ph.D. at
Cornell University. He has
taught at Haverford College,
Brandeis University and is
currently the H^nry R. Luce
Professor at Civilisation and
Foreign Affairs and Aca-demic
Derfh, Fletcher
School of Law and Diplo-macy.
Dr. Roche was a
f e c i a l consultant to the
Department of State and
Vice President Hubert H.
Humphrey from 1964 to
1966 and to President Lyn-don
B. Johnson from 1966
to 1968. He has had visiting
appointments at Swarth-more
College, Cornell and
Columbia Universities and
the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. He has been
a fellow of the Fund for the
Advancement of Education,
and the Rockefeller Foun-dation,
and was National
Chair, Americans for Demo-cratic
Action. Dr. Roche's
