ERA Party
Installs Officers
PETER MAKING his thank you remarks. L to R Andrew
Jarchin, VP and Director of Marketing, Fred J. Meyer
Exec. V.P., Branch Manager Salomon Acosta and Honoree
Peter Zarba.
An overflow crowd of
enthusiastic supporters
came together on Sunday,
January 22nd, at the Main
Street Firehouse as the East
Rockaway Action Party
installed its slate of officers
for the 1989 year. President
William Kelleher, who has
been universally credited
with moving the party
toward a new spirit of open-ness
and strict adherence to
democratic principles, was
installed for his second term
as Party President.
Martin Evans, who joined
with Kelleher two years ago
dull moment! Now it's time
for new blood on the school
Board and new challenges
for me."
Meagher's school district
service began with a two-year
stint on the first task
Force on Educational Prior-ities,
a citizens' advisory
committee created in Fall
1978 and chaired first by Jim
Fitzpatrick and then by
Eleanor Perri., This expe-rience
was followed by an
appointment to fill out-going
School Board member
Roger Humes' seat in 1980-
1981.
"I was soundly defeated
by A1 Kachinoski for a
Board seat in the June 1981
election," said Meagher,
"but was chosen to head a
citizens' adviso^ committee
on the budget in the fall of
1981." Meagher subse-quently
won election to a
three-year term on the Board
of Education in 1983 and ran
unopposed in 1986 for
another three-year term.
Meagher became Board
President early in 1984 upon
the resignation of former
President Rose Marie
Brande following the over-whelming
defeat of a $10
million bond issue which
had proposed replaci-ng both
Centre and Rhame with new
elementary schools. "A per-sonal
high," said Meagher,
"was seeing the passage of
a lower-cost renovation
bond issue in the spring of
1984 as we pulled together
again as a community."
Perhaps the low point of
his years on the Board,
Meagher noted, was the
grim, grey Sunday, January
19, 1986, the day of the
Rhame Avenue fire. "But
even then there was the
wonderful experience of a
community pulling together
in a moment of crisis, and
I will never forget the firm,
calm leadership of Board
President John Van Houten
and Superintendent Robert
Parry during that tragedy.
Board members Meagher
has served with include the
following: Harry Bunting,
Earl Cole, Jim Fitzpatrick,
Rose Marie Brande, A1
Kachinoski, Dolores Mag-gio,
Barry Akrongold, John
Van Houten, Elaine Boll,
Carol Burris, Jane Breze-noff,
and Denise Albrecht.
Superintendents he worked
with were Dr. William K.
Louis, Michael Maiden, and
Robert Parry.
Meagher served under
Board Presidents Harry
Bunting and Rose Marie
Brande before becoming
President himself and has
served for the last four years
under President John Van
Houten.
"As former Board
member Roger Humes once
told me during a period of
some controversy in our
school district," said
Meagher, "there is no such
thing as a 'new' Board or an
'old' Board, just the on-going
Board of Education
with its important mission to
oversee the education of our
children, all our children. It
has been a pleasure and an
honor to 'stand my watch'."
Lynbrook Independent Party
as running mates in a con-tested
Party election which
ousted the Party leadership
that had virtually held exclu-sive
control of Party and
Village affairs for almost 20
years, was installed as Vice-
President.
Also sworn in for the
upcoming year were Sandra
Torborg, Secretary; John
Roberts, Treasurer; and
Directors, Adrienne
Stender, George McDougal
and Denis Motherway.
