The Lynbrook Board of
Trustees Meeting of April 3,
1989 was marked by a
packed attendance with
"wall-to-wall" people with
the heaviest contingent from
the winning Lynbrook Inde-pendent
Party at Village
Hall.
Former Trustees Steve
Grogan and Eugene Natale
made a brief speeches of
thanks to all those who had
helped them during their
terms in office with the stress
of both the "hope that this
Board will continue to act as
a team for the benefit of the
people."
Former Village Justice
John O'Connor castigated
the type of literature and
campaign materials sent out
by the Independent Party
and stated that he hoped that
in the next election, the party
campaigns could stick to the
issues and not make use of
derogatory pamphlets that
he found very upsetting.
Mayor Geier presented
plaques to each departing
Trustee and to Judge O'Con-nor
in recognition of their
service to the village.
Bruce Bregman was
sworn into office by Hon.
Francis X. Becker, Justice of
the Supreme Court who also
administered th oath to new
Trustee Bill Hendricks.
Judge P. Palameri admon-istered
th oath of office to
Trustee Mary Colway.
Trustee Bill Hendricks
took his seat on the Board
and stated that he knew how
the defeated Trustees felt, as
in a previous election he felt
the defeat but he hoped that
it had made him a better
man. He pledged to do his
best as Trustee. Trustee
Mary Colway thanked all'
those who had helped get her
elected and stated her coop-eration
with Mayor Geier if
he would meet Bill Hen-drick,
Dominick DeCarlo
and herself half-way or
three-fifths of the way. She
further stated, "Please rise to
meet us the rest of the way.".
Mayor Geier appointed
Trustee Norman Dreyer as

Senior Citizens. Trustee
Colway was appointed lia-son

the Mayor some imput on
their choice of people for
appointments.

for the Public Hearing was
set for May 1, 1989 for 292
Hendrickson Ave.
The Board approved the
placing of stop signs at the
intersection of Doxey Place
and Atlantic Ave at the
request of a Senior petition.
No bids were received for

Mercury. The Bids will be

Lynbrook Public Schools Budget & Elections

Scouts to the congregation:

and Miss Madeline Pearson,

Volunteers; Mrs.
Adrienne Wallace, Troop
Organizer for Malverne;

Mrs. Helen Leahy,
Brownie and Junior Girl
Scout Consultant, and Mrs.
Gloria Braun, Service Team
member.
Also introduced were Jen-nifer
Reddin and Justine
Hamilton. Jennifer is a pros-pective
Gold Award recip-ient,
which is the highest
award that can be achieved
in Girl Scouting. Justine has
been chosen to attend a
Wider Opportunity Pro-gram
at Mt. St. Helen in
Colorado this June. Both
girls are members of Older
Girl Troop 4007.
Lynbrook residents will
go to the polls on Wednes-day,
May 3 to vote on a
proposed $25.5milIion 1989-
90 school budget, two com-rnunity
organized proposi-tions,
and fill two seats on
the Board of Education.
Although negotiations are in
progress, on the budget, the
anticipated tax per $100
assessed valuation is $35.65
for Class One, an increased
of $1.75. Much of the
increase is due to the ;new
mandated asbestos regula-tions
that will result in the
cost of more than $224,000
next year and the rise in the
mandated programs for han-dicapped
children of
$88,556. These services for
younsters with learning dis-abilities
are authorized by
State law and include tui-tions
paid to BOCES and
other schools providing
instruction. Also, the district
must continue the replace-ment
of fuel tanks at a rate
of $126,000 per tank.
Other factors in the
budget include facilities and
operations for the district's
seven buildings with higher
costs for salaries, equipment
and supplies, fuel and util-ities,
and repairs and upkeep
of grounds—curriculum
development and supervi-sion
for expenses related to
the administration of district
wide instruction. According
to Superintendent of
Schools Bern Seiderman,
although this year's figures
contain several mandated
high cost items, "unfortu-nately,
they do not directly
contribute to the educa-tional
programs that should
have the highest priority in
the expenditure of our
budget." However, he adds,
"Despite these unfinanced
mandates, the Board of
Education and Central
Administration are deter-mined
to minimize the costs
to the community and have
spent untold hours in devel-oping
a prudent student-centered
budget for appro-val,"
Dr. Seiderman stresses
the Board's desire to avoid
a bond issue, although "vir-tually
every other school
district in our area has
utilized the bond as a major
source of revenue," because,
he explains, the Lyn Board
continues to take the posi-tion
that a long range plan
designed to replace and
improve buildings ulti-mately
presents less of a tax
burden to local citizens.
Too, approximately nine
staff members will be trained
to abate asbestos. This,
according to Assistant
Superintendent of Business
William Metkiff, wills save
tens of thousands of dollars
in abating areas requiring
immediate attention.
Dr. Seiderman points out
that members of the Board,
the professional staff, and
residents of the Lynbrook
School District ar aware of
the continued positive pro-
