WEDDING BELLS...were ringing on August 5th for John Morano, ERHS Class of
1978, shown here with his bride, Kristin Anderson of Pennsylvania at their reception.
Also shown are John's proud parents, Elaine and John Morano, both graduates of
East Rockaway Schools and residents for many years. Mrs. Morano is known to a
generation (maybe more) of children who attended Centre Avenue Elementary School,
where she taught until her recent retirement. John's best man was Mark Wipfler, (ERHS
78), and ushers included John Cariguilo (ERHS 78), Carl DeMasi (ERHS 77) and
Joe Lores, who teaches and coaches at ERHS. An entire contingent of East Rockaway
residents drove to Pennsylvania for the festivities. And John's going to kill me for putting
this on the front page!

Jim Duncan
Appointed
Ex-Fire Chief Jim Dun-can,
also a member of our
East Rockaway Postal Ser-vice,
has been appointed a
member of the Grist Mill
Museum committee by
Mayor Irving Shaw and
Village Trustees.
Jim has taken a great
interest in the "Fire Room"
in the Museum, especially

since a new showcase
placed there. Soon it
filled with East Rockaway
Fire Department memorabi-lia
plus a number of his "fire
patches" from all over. He
is also in the process of
setting up a comprehensive
display of the past concern-ing
first aid given to patients
soon after our fire whistle
had given three blasts.
Another "special of the
month" depicts the lady
from the Museum's Milling
exhibit about to do some
home canning in the
"Fashion" exhibit that was
across the aisle from her
usual base.
This, and "new" old things
to look for, may be spotted
in Sam Rhame's store
located near the Woods
Avenue Schoolroom. One
item is an 1890 weather
house on an upper shelf.
When it rains, a small man
comes out of one door; but
when the sun shines, a fair
lady would appear. These

his counter, is an old stereo-scope

engraved velvet-padded
sides. A little girl, making a
purchase of an autograph
album in the store, gazes at
the double pictures of a
European scene.
The Sioux
Indian
Give Away.
by Mildred Roemer
When lecturing on my
Sioux "kolas" (friend in
Indian) I'm often asked what
Imeanby a "give away."
I was reminded just this
week of this typically Indian
tradition, "when a large box
arrived in East Rockaway
from Arlis Big Eagle of
Harrold, South Dakota. Her
mother, a long-time friend
Mary Agnes and her brother
Tim had passed on a year
ago.
"We held our 'give away'
service in our house" she
wrote and said, "this star
qililt that we made and a
shawl from my cousin is for
the many years you have
helped us." The quilt, in del-icate
pastel shades, is lik^Ltc
two star quilts that are being
used as the background for
the August "Canning"
exhibit now in the Grist Mill
Museum.
