LI.R.R. Stalled on
Thanksgiving Day
Lynbrook Board Meeting
Mildred Roemer
Last week, the weather-men
on TV exclaimed as
how there had not been snow
on Thanksgiving Day in
over fifty years! According
to the late Pine Pearsall, this
)hoto (owned by the
Museum) was taken near
Rockaway on Thanksgiving
Day in the early nineteen
hundreds. Our recent
"flurry" might have seemed
like nothing to the spectator
in the picture standing hip-deep
in the snow.
Ye historian remembers,
not so much the snow, but
the "Grand Canal" in Bay
Park freezing over. Ice
skates were brought out and
parents became **slightly"
concerned due to the fact
that the ice was never too
solid at the ed^es near the
pilings. Daredevils also used
to form a long line across
the canal and race down
together towards the old
bndge (now gone). The ice
would roll in a wave in front
of them due to their weight.
Fun, eh?

The last Lynbrook Board
of Trustee Meeting held at
Village Hall on Monday,
November was briefer then
usual and adjourned at an
early hour.
Mayor Bill Geier admin-istered
the oath of office to
Frank Zafonte a former
LILCO supervisor and
licensed plumber to the
Plumbing Board of Examin-ers
replacing retired Abra-ham
Alexander who now
lives in Florida.
The Board approved
funds for repair of a rear
portion of the Village Hall
which is in danger of col-lapse
due to water seepage
as explained by the Village Engi-neer.
It is a matter of "bear-ings
and membranes"
which could cause a cave-in
and damage the Police Tel-ecommunication
facilities
which are directly below the
spot. Mayor Geier stated
that the anticipated cost
would be $15,000 to $20,000.
Next on the agenda was
a transfer of funds needed by
Carol Hansen, Village
Treasurer with (a) a transfer
of funds for the Payroll
Attendance of $730 and (b)
$38^672 from the Contin-gency
Fund for the Police
Retirement Account.
The Bid date for Street
Lighting Maintenance set
for November 30th was
changed to December 4th,
the next Board Meeting.
TheD.P.W. wiU not make
bulk pick-ups during
Thanksgiving Week.
Trustee Mary Colway
praised the D.P.W. for their
record number of 300 pick-ups
so far this month.
The first Board Meeting
of 1990 was set for January
8th, 1990.
The Board cancelled the
December 18, 1989 Board
Meeting.
A resident was heard on
Good and Welfare about the
possibility of repairing a
fence on property adjacent
to Shipherd Avenue. Deputy
Police Chief, Michael Chi-armonte
advised all resi-dents
to avoid parking over
piled up leaves at street
curbs, as several cars have
caught fire and been des-troyed
when they turned on
their motors, mostly the 4
cyclinder compact cars.
The Mayor and Trustees
were reminded to come out
to greet Santa Claus on
Saturday morning,
November 25, 1989 at the
Earle Avenue lot by the
Executive Secretary of the
Lynbrook Chamber of
Commerce.
The next Board Meeting
will be held on December 4,
1989.
