Maybe Meters Are the Answer
A collision between two Lynbrook fire trucks responding to a
call resulted in the death of school crof.sing guard, a mother of
three children, and a volunteer fireman, last Tuesday, April 30th.
Killed instantly was Mrs. l^osalie Roy, 37, of 213 Sherman St.,
Lynbrook and William Koch, 64 Marion St., Lynbrook who died
later at Mercy Hospital. Fireman Peter Moody, 14 Marion St.,
and Joseph Fischer, 21 Marion St. are still in critical condition
at the hospital.
An eyewitness to the accident,
14 year old Thomas Cronin, a mem-ber
of Explorer Journalism Post
#388, was waiting for a friend,
Steven Maroney, prior to return-ing
to school from lunch hour,
Cronin said "I watched the truck
going up Hempstead ave., when
from out of nowhere another fire
truck suddenly shot out of Penin-sula
Blvd. There was a crash and
I saw bodies flying in the air. I ran
into Dr. Maroney's office (a dentist
at 20 Hempstead ave.) to get aid,
but he had already heard and seen
the crash from his window and was
telephoning for help."
Other •witnesses said that Mrs.
Roy had just brought a group of
children to the southeast corner of
Hempstead and Peninsula and had
returned to the north side minutes
before the accident.
Besides the two firemen on the
critical list; Peter Skeris, 114 Steven-son
St., was treated at the hospital
and released. Six others were treat-ed
at the scene.
One of the trucks, the Tally
Ho Co. was heading east on Pen-insula.
The other. Hose Co. No. 1,
was northbound on Hempstead.
Witnesses said that Mrs. Roy had
stopi)ed traffic to let the fire appar-atus
pass.
The fire to which they were
resiwnding was caused by a small
explosion in a furnace which blew
off doors, causing smoke in a pri-vate
house at 331 Earle ave., Lyn-brook.
The Rosary will be said for Mrs.
Roy Thursday evening, May 2, at
the Flinch and Bruns Funeral Home
with a requiem mass being oflered
at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady
of Peace R.C. Church.
Fraternal services for Mr. Koch
will be Tluu-sday at tlie Jolm C.
Perry Fun(>ral Home. A reciuieui
mass will be said at 10:45 a.m. at
St. Raymond's R.C. Church on Fri-day.
The audience at the May 11 con-cert
of the Lynbrook Philharmonic
Orchestra will see a refreshing
change in roles when Emanuel
Vardi, conductor of the orchestra,
will appear as viola soloist in Allen's
Shulman's "Theme and Variations,"
while Mr. Shulman (shown above)
conducts.
This final concert of the veiy suc-cessful
season enjoyed by the L j t i -
brook Philharmonic will also include
the "Ronnan Carnival" overture by
Berlioz, and Beethoven's "Seventh"
Symphony. Mr. Vardi will conduct
these works.
Dr. Edward L. Heth, president
of the LPO, annoimced that Mrs.
Jack Bobbins will be chairman of
the 1963-64 subscription drive which
will begin at this last concert. Prices
for the season subscriptions for the
four concert series will remain un-changed:
$4.00 for adults, $2.00 for
students, or $10.00 for a family.

is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for

In contrast to last week's photo that the HE1.M ran on the UNMETERED
Foi-est Ave. Piu-king field, this photo of the METERED field at the corner
of Langdou Place and Broadway shows that shoijpers might prefer to pay
for their parking. The picture was taken on Monday afternoon, April
and shows the field nearly filled to capacity. These meters seem to be
crying out: "Please Mr. Mayor, don't pull us out'.l" (HELM Photo)
