Torch Run
For the first time on Amer-ican
soil, a re-enactment of a
tradition of the Jewish people that
is over 2,000 years old, will take
place in Nassau County on Sat-urday
evening, December 18th at
7 P.M., in an historic five mile
torch rua connecting Synagogues
on the night of the firs: candle
of tha Feast of Lights, Chanukah.
Torches will be carried five
miles from Oceanside to Lyn-brook
where at Congregation Beth
David, the first candle of a gi-gantic
Menorah on the roof of
the Congregation will be lit by
one oif the torch carriers, Steven
Powitz, a member of the Congre-gatix)
n and ^ student at Yeshiva
University.

Rockville Centre and Lyn-brook
will accompany the runners
on this historic occasion which

stronghold of Modin th-roughout
all of Israel.
The Maccabeia, the Internat-ional
Olympics of Jewish Athle-tes
which takes place in Israel
begins with just such a torch
run. This was the inspiration for
the event in Nassau, to show tha
unity of the various Synagogues
who are ever faithful to their
tradition of standing up and being
counted when ^ha rights and lib-erties
of any group are threa-tened.
Last week the Lynbrook Chapter of the American Field Service
held a panel discussion at Lynbrook High School between Amer-ican

to all members of the Junior Group of the American Field Service.

is the Cantique de Noel

Kenneth Roemer of the Class
