Rev. Webber
To Japan
The Rev. Christopher L, Web-ber,
Rector of Christ Church,
Lynbrook, since 1960, has ac-cepted
election as Rector of Si.
Alban's Church, Tokyo, Japan,
to take effect in Fabruary, 1966.
Si. Alban's Church is a parish
of the Nippon Seikekai (Holy Ca-tholic
Church in Japan), the Ja-panese
Province of the Anglican
Communion. Established to serve
English-speaking members of the
Anglican Communion in Tokyo,
St. Alban's Church is composed
primarily of families stationed
in Japan in governmont, business,
and military service. Adjacent to
the proposed Tokyo Cathedral,
the parish also serves as cen-ter
for various conferences and
training programs for clergy and
laymen ov the Nippon .Seikokai.
Father Webber came to Lyn-brook
after serving as Rector
of the Church of the Ascension,
Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and as Tu-tor
and Fellow ol the General
Theological Seminary. He has
served as an Examining Chap-lain
to the Bishop of Long Is-land,
OS well as on various Di-ocesan

At about 2:30 A.M. Dec. 20,
Ptl. Charles Carafano on radio
motor patrol duty observed an
Oldsmobile convertible stopped
at the south side of Merrick
Road opposite the Merrick Scrap
Iron and Metal Co. at 633 Mer-rick
Rd., with the motor run-ning
and a man behind the wheel.
Ptl. Carafano parked on an ad-jacent
street and observed this
car pull into the parking lot
adjacent to the company.
He drove into the lot and
observed one Joseph Merlino,
18 yrs., of Brooklyn, unloading
scrap metal, copper and faucets
into the trunk of his car from
several barrels.
Ptl. Carafano placed Merlino
under arrest and radioed for
assistance, with Lieut. Francis
Karg and Ptl. Herbert Birdsall
responding. Merlino was re-moved
to Lynbrook Police Head-quarters
where he stated that
he had previously moved bar-rels
of scrap metal from the scr-ap
metal yard on a hand truck
to a position by the fence and
then removed the scrap metal
from the barrels into the trunk
of his car.
Det. Rofhart and McGowan,
5th. Sqd. N.C.P.D., assisted on
the investigation. Merlino was
arraigned in First District Court
on a charge of unlawful entry
and larceny.
HOW NOW
The following is a list of ques-tions
asked of Commissioner Eu-gene
Gibbons and his staff of the
Nassau County Public Works De-partment
by interested citizens
regarding the proposed widening
of East Rockaway Road. THE
HELM would also like to know the
answers.
We would like to know the
number of complaints received
during the past 3-year period
concerning the flow of traffic on
East Rockaway Road, ...the num-ber
of complaints from residents
near the Meadowview curve, ...
the number of complaints concer-ning
the hazard of the curve at
Meadowview, ...the number of
complaints about the surface of
the road in wet weather?
Other roads in the county must
have undergone a widening such
as proposed by the County En-gineers
for East Rockaway Road.
What are the comparative figures
as to the number of accidents
before and after widening, and...
the increased density of traffic?
What is the cost of resurfa-cing
the entire length of the road,
and what is the longevity of the
skid-proof surface and the costs
then involved in resurfacing par-ticularly
at the curves considered
hazardous?
What means will be taken to
control the flow and speed of four
lanes of moving traffic in order
to maintain a safe road for local
drivers using it as accesstoside
streets and for the two thousand
school children who will cross it
daily? If the timing of traffic
lights is sufficient to allow the
safe crossing of a 64' roadway
by children and older people, at
the same time considering that
pedestrians cannot cross into
turning traffic, will not the Co-unty's
purpose of obtaining a
smooth flow of traffic be defe-ated?
What were the plans of the De-partment
for the moving of tra-ffic
now utilizing the expanded
facility of Lawson Boulevard in
Oceanside and connecting with
Long Beach Road? .
What number of the accidents
upon which you based your stat-istics
involved more than one car,
and ... what number of ac idents
took place in wet weather?
It was said that 16,000 cars
daily use East Rockaway Road.
At what time of the day and year
was this count t^en and was it
of 24-hour duration or is this a
computed figure?
Commissioner Gibbons-THE
HELM and interested residents
want to know.
