CLERGY
SPEAK
Our community has experi-enced
strife, tension and hostil-ity
for the past three years.
The Courts have now ruled. It
is time to permit our community
to bind up its woulds.
We endorse the efforts of
those groups who seek a posi-tive,
constructive approach to
our problems and are moving for- ^
ward to provide the best possi-ble
education for our children.
We believe that this goal of
academic excellence can be achi-eved
with the united effort of all
our citizens.
At the suggestion of mem-bers
of the School Board, we
recently wrote to Deputy Com-missioner
Ewald B. Nyquist con-cerning
the possibility of our
School District receiving finan-cial
assistance for the task of
achieving outstanding schools.
The Commissioner's response
was favorable and he suggested
that his office would help us in
seeking such funds. We under-stand
that the Committee of 80
has been exploring avenues for
such financial support.
However, Commissioner Ny-quist
emphasized that «the pre-requisite
for outside help...is
evidence of determination within
the community to work toward a
meaningful program".
We urge the School Board of
District #12 to exercise positive
leadership in this direction. When
that leadership will be forthcom-ing,
we are confident that we
shall be able to successfully
apply for financial assistance
from a number of sources.
We have great faith in our
community and our schools work-ing
in cooperation. We shall
yet be able to achieve our goals.

THANK YOU FOR
HER LIFE
A few months ago, the res-idents
of East Rockaway and
Lynbrook were called upon to
perform an act of charity for a
little neighbor who needed help.
Little Winifred Kennedy is a
three year old who required open
heart surgery to correct a con-dition
which has been with her
since birth. Winifred's mother
and father were in no position
to finance this operation that
was vital if Winifred were to
continue living.
Only recently had a surgical
procedure been perfected which
could aid "Little Yank" and that
by a Canadian surgeon who later
successfully operated on the lit-tle
girl. Because the delicate
operation was performed outside
the U. S., no Federal or State
funds were available to the Ken-nedy's.
Representatives from Civic,
Fraternal and Service organiza-tions
in Lynbrook and East Rock-away
formed a committee to raise
the necessary funds for "Little
Yank." The committee adopted
the title of HER LIFE (Help East
Rockaway-Lynbrook Inter-com-munity
Fund Endeavor). The co-mmittee
called upon all the good
people of these two villages to
assist in helping this lovely little
girl. The response was over-whelming,
coming from all over
Long Island, as the following
financial statement proves:
Gross Income-$3388.65, Ex-penses
-$1067.00, Cost of Opera-tion
-$1431.55, Left for future
operations $890.10.
Additional donations(made out
to HER-LIFE and sent to Frank
Nulty, 309 Earle Ave., Lynbrook,
or George L. Perry, 16 Colum-bia
Ave., East Rockaway) will
be placed in the savings account
by the Financial Committee.
Frank Nulty and George L.
Perry, co-chairmen, and the en-tire
committee wish to extend
their sincere thanks to the won-derful
people of the communi-ties
for the fine charitable and
neighborly way in which they
responded.
The Kennedy's express their
thanks to everyone in the fol-lowing
statement:
"We would like to take this
opportunity to publicly thank all
the wonderful people and organi-zations
responsible for the suc-cess
of our "Little Yank's" op-eration.
If it had not been for
the time, effort and generosity
of all these people our Wini-fred's
future would still be bleak.
"To the "Her Life" commit-tee
itself, which formed and ran
the affair, our unforgettable grat-itude.
"For the warm personal let-ters
we received at home, which
meant so much, our deep appre-ciation.
"To the local service, civic
and religious organizations, who
stood so firmly behind the com-mittee
and made the entire affair
a success - we thank you.
"To the HELM and the other
publications which donated space
for this appeal, and to the people
and organizations which perfor-med
at the final party, our warm-est
thanks.
"And most of all, to YOU - the
public - the friends, neighbors
and strangers who opened your
hearts and made an otherwise
impossible situation become a
reality, we are forever indebted.
"As we watch our little dau-ghter
grow stronger each day,
our hearts grow full with the re-alization
that her future is prac-tically
guaranteed due to your
wonderful generosity. The latest
medical reports have shown the
operation to have been much more
successful than originally figu-red.
Rather than the additional
3 or 4 operations thought needed,
one more may suffice.
"We thank God each night for
each and every one of you. Words
seem futile as we try to thank
you and wish we could clasp every
hand that helped us.
"Again, from deep in our hea-rts,
and for our little Winifred-
God Bless You, Everyone."
