For God Ana Country
On June 29th the Ad Hoc Committee for Peace in the
Fifth Congressional District sponsored an Anti-Viet Nam
Rally in the Hewlett High School. The rally was also sup-ported
by the Women's Strike for Peace, The Catholic
Worker (not affiliated in any way with the Roman Catholic
Church) and other so-called peace groups.
Before the meeting began, as the pictures indicate, over
150 veterans of Nassau County demonstrated against the rally
with signs, picketed all entrances to the school and parking
lots, and then joined the audience after the rally began.
In a speech last weekend. Past Commander Ray Gimmler
of ER American Legion Post #958 and Legion 1st District
Americanism officer had the following to say regarding
what these groups were selling. We can think of no better
way to show our support for our Viet Nam policy.
"They told you of the misery, killings and suicides and
the burning of villages in Viet Nam that we are responsible
f o r . They did not tell you of the slaughter and torture of
entire villages or the killing of innocent people with the de-liberate
bombings of hotels and clubs in Siagon by the Com-munists.
"They told you we must pull out and let the Vietnamese
settle their own problems. They did not tell you that this
would then bring about the greatest blood bath since Hungary.
"They told you that we should not fight for freedom in
Viet Nam, but put all our efforts into giving the Negro his
freedom in the south and assist him with the funds not spent
in the war. They did not tell you that America has and always
will defend freedom both at home and abroad and that our
great country has not only been helping the unfortunate ha-e,
but is the greatest charitable country in the history of the
world.
"Tliey told you that morally God does not want us in Viet
Nam. They did not tell you that sinre when does God only want
us to defend freedom and religion in tlie US and not abroad.
"They told you how the Pope was upset over the break-down
of peace in Viet Nam. They did not tell you that every
Pope since the existence of Communism has prayed and been
upset by the takeover of countries which then end up with

Malverne
School Census
The annual school census of
children from birth to 18 years
of age will be taken in Malverne
School District 12 between July
15 and August 21 by three enu-merators
£^)pointed by the Board
of Education.
In addition to the names and
birth dates of all children, the
enumerators will obtain a count
of the number of adults and the
number of houses. This informa-tion
is used in planning studies
and is made available to the Nas-sau
County Planning Commission
for their use in reports of popu-lation
and population trends.
The enumerators, Mrs. Sylvia
Epstein, Mrs. Yetta Keen and Mr.
Dominick Bambina, will carry
identification badges and letters
certifying to their appointment.
This is done for the protection
of residents who may be asked
for information by unauthorized
persons. Dr. Howard T. Herber,
Superintendent of Schools, stated
that N.Y. State law requires that
information regarding children
be given to the enumerators.
Speno Grab
Grounded
Congressman Frank J. Becker, retired, stated yesterday that
an abortive attempt on the part of County GOP Leader Edward J,
Speno to set up his own organization in Lynbrook failed two weeks
ago. The former Congressman withheld making any statement in
connection therewith until this week as he felt it could do " m y"
party no good in light of the coming election. However, since mis-information
has been spread by local news media, he flet the record
should be put straight. In an exclusive interview with this news-pape"
rI tlheea rCnoend groef sssmomane ksitnadte odf: a
petition being circulated among
our Republican Committeemen
and immediately called a meeting
to discuss it. However, at the
meeting which took place on Wed-nesday
evening, June 29th, the
ring leadei' of the opposition was
reluctant to produce it. When he
did, I noted 14 signatures on tlie
petition of which 3 had, prior to
the meeting, signed written rev-ocations.
So, out of 30 committ-eemen
there were only 11 signa-tures
on the petition, which re-quested
an executive meeting on
June 24th, a date which had al-ready
passed, todis(;ussachange
in leadership of the Lynbrook
Committee.
"A motion was made to en-tertain
the petition. I pointed out
to my fellow committeemen that
neither I nor my co-executive
committeeman, Eugene Kraus,
intended to resign, and as we had
both been unanimously ele 'ed
executive committeemen barely
a year ago for two year terms,
and there being no grounds in
our by-laws or constitution on
which this petition could be en-tertained,
the motion was out
of order.
"As there had been discussion
that County Leader Edward Speno
was holding up job appointments
from the Lynbrook Republican
Organization, I did entertain a
motion that patronage appoint-ments
be restored to the present
leadership, Frank J. Becker and
Eugene Kraus. This motion was
carried by a vote of 18 to 3 -
the three opposed were Jerome
Lowenthal, recently j4)pointed
Chairman of the Zoning Board of
the Village of Lynbrook and a
highly placed employee of the
Parks Department of the Town of
Hempstead, Lynbrook Village At-torney
Anthony Scuderi, and Fl-oyd
Wilcox, Supt. of Public Works
of the Village of Lynbrook.
"During the course of the
evening, I pointed out that under
my leadership of over 13 years
Lynbrook maintained a position
of 4lh in pluralities in all of
Nassau County and was one of
only six Republican Organiza-tions
that each year, during this
same period, met the quota set
up by the County Finance Com-mittee.
"As a gesture of unity, I
have appointed tlie opposition lea-der,
Mr. Lowenthal, who has the
most lucrative job of our local
committeemen, as our Finance
Chairman for the year 1966, and
John Giles, Chairmanof the Cam-paign
Committee.
"It is my hope that this poorly
devised scheme to destroy the
independence of our Lynbrook
Republican Organization will not
disrupt our plans in Lynbrook
for winning the coming election."
Dianne Bassett of East Rockaway, one of the f i r s t s u r f e r s to take
advantage of Hempstead Town's new surfing area at Lido Beach,
shows Gardiner S. McMullan, town park director, and lifeguard
Edward McCable how she waxes her board.
