Rescue By Teenagers
The quick thinking of local
teenagers averted what might
have been a fatal mishap this past
Sunday when Harold Bedell of
Valley Stream fell from his boat
in East Rockaway Channel. Vinnie
Caslin of 1st Street, EastRocka-jiray,
was adjusting the motor on
the boat of his friend Walter Urell
of Chestnut Street, Lynbrook,
when he sighted the man in the
' p r a t e r and the empty boat circ-
...,^ing back upon him. The two boys
sped to the injured man's side and
pulled him from the water. He had
been badly lacerated by the pro-peller
blades of his toat. Also
joining in the rescue were Frank
Lenihan of Adams Street, East
Rockaway, and Kevin McVeigh of
Freeport, two Bay Park Beach
lifeguards who had also seen the
man floundering in the water. The
boys, all 16 years of age, hailed
a big boat which called for help. A
police launch from the Marine
Bureau at Sampson St. reached
the boat the 2 p.m., however it
was decided not to move the s e r -
iously injured man from the boys'
boat. He was taken to the Ocean-side
Yacht Basin where he was
transferred to an ambulance from
the 1st Precinct and taken to South
Nassau Hospital. He is listed in
critical condition as we go to
press.

Lent this week demanded that County Executive Eugene Nickerson
and County Public Works Commissioner Herbert J. Simins abolish
the county's plan to widen East Rockaway Road.
"The county's plan to widen this road is dangerous to the public
safety and a threat to destroy the character of the community,"
Blakeman and Lent said in a joint statement sent to Nickerson.
"Widening East Rockaway Road into a highway will destroy
established residential communities, bring in a flood of new traffic,
endangering the safety of children and pedestrians, and causing In-creased

to this Ul-concelved road widening and we demand the Demo-cratic
