Herber AFS Student
Scholarship Arrives
FISHING WAS GOOD, BUT HE LOST ONE, HIS CAR: Josef Gehart of Elmont went fishing early Sunaay
morning at the County Park and Marina Just south of East Rockaway In Bay Park and before the sun had
risen he had cauc^t his fish and lost his car. It all started when he backed his trailer and car up to the
ramp at the dock to take his boat out. The boat was on the trailer and he got back Into his car to drive
up the ramp when suddenly the car slid back Into the water so only the antenna was showing. It took two
tow trucks three hours to get the car and t r a i l e r out. The photo shows the trucks pulling the car up the
ramp as water pours out of It.
The Howard T. Herber Tes-timonial
Committee announced
with deep regret that because
of the lamented passing of Dr.
Herber It must cancel its plans
for the testimonial dinner pre-viously
announced for October
4th. In taking this action the com-mittee
pledged its determination
to enable the vast community of
faculty, friends, students, col-leagues,
alunml and admirers to
express their tribute to this de-voted
educator through contri-butions
to the Howard T. Her-ber
Scholarship Fund.
The Committee Issued the
following statement:
"Howard T. Herber has pas-sed
on but his deeds will not be
forgotten. His contributions to
education, spanning three and one
half decades were not confined
to Malverne but were given f r e e -
ly to and shared respectfully by
the entire state. Thousands of
children, hundreds of teachers
were enriched by his leadership,
knowledge, compassion and un-derstanding.
To the very end,
Howard Herber stood for ex-cellence
in education, and spared

American Field Service stud-ent,
Miss Nhane Liensavanh, of
Savannakhet, Laos, has come to
attend senior classes at Lynbrook
High School for one year. She Is
living at the home of Mr. & Mrs.
Edwin Garrison and their four da-ughters.
Nhane, 18 years old, has been
a student in the English Division
of L'Ecole SuperiordePedagogre
in Vientiane, where she is prepa-ring
to become a teacher. She sp-eaks
Thai, French, English, and
Lao (which she is teaching to Mr.
Garrison), and is interested in
music, loves to sing, enjoys cam-ping,
cooking and sports. She
has two brothers and two sist-ers.
Nhane, was selected by the
American Field Service (in co-operation
with educators in La-as)
as "being qualified to make
this experience enriching both
for herself and for all with whom
she comes in contact".
WhUe in the United States, she
hopes to learn more about Ameri-can
teaching techniques so that
she can return to Laos next July
better prepared to serve her pe-ople
as a modern effective educa-tor.

"ALIENS" ARRESTED IN EAST ROCKAWAY: Two members of the
Aliens motorcycle gang were arrested early Sunday morning In
East Rockaway. The gang from Brooklyn was previously In trouble
in Elmont. Only two a r r e s t s were made, although summonses were
given to aU cyclists, John Pallon, 29, of 121 Atlantic Avenue,
Massapequa, for malicious mischief for writing on a police car,
and Lorl Rust, 21, of 1213 E. 2nd Street, Brooklyn, for disorderly
conduct. John Pallon, In his medal bedecked Jacket, and Lorl Rus^
covering her face, are taken from 4th Precinct Headquarters to
Mineola by Ptl. Condon.
