YOUTH COUNCIL
FOURTH BATTALION CHAMPS
The newly formed Lyn-brook
Youth Council held their
first full important meeting on
Sunday, Nov. 24, 19G8 at the Li-brary
Room in Our Lady of Peace
Church. The group, the first at-tempt
at a unified wholy rep-resentative
youth council made
up of representatives from every
Lynbrook youth group either in
School District#20or in churches
or temples etc, went over the
draft of their constitution word
for word to make sure that it
was accurate and fit in with the
ideas behind formulating their
group. The Youth Council met
under the guidance of Mr. George
Wetherston, Chairman of the
Mayor's Advisory Committee on
Youth and one of the Committee
members, also a member of the
Lynbrook Recreation Commis-sion,
Mr. Eugene Scarpatto. A-bout
twenty-five young people
listened to the reading of the
constitution which had been
worked on by a Special Commit-tee
headed by Miss Lisa Di-rector.
Mayor Francis X, Becker
made an appearance at the meet-ing
despite his busy schedule and
spoke to them briefly about the
importance of their work and the
fact that this was really the first
work in Lynbrook in getting a
truly unified Youth Council which
would be operating under the
democratic principles of our
country and give youth the chance
to be heard here in Lynbrook,
U,S,A. on matters especially im-portant
to their age group. He
further stated tliat he hoped that
each of them would get to know
a little more about local or vil-lage
government and participate
and become partof the community
life. The members of the Youth
Council argued democratically
about the number of representa-tives
allowed to each group and
various other important points
that made the Mayor at one
point state that it reminded him
of the U.N. but still it was all
done with the best of good spirit
and thoughtfulness by the young
people themselves. Mr. Eugene
Scarpatto chaired the meeting
skillfully and allowed the young
people to more or less direct
the extent of their participation,
Lynbrook definitely has some-thing
new and worthwhile, it's
first Youtli Council and much
good will come from their work
and efforts in the years to come.
