A regular meeting of the Lyn-brook
Village Board of Trustees
was held at The Community Bank,
15 Atlantic Ave., Lynbrook,
Monday evening, Dec. 2, 1968
at 8:00 p.m. The regular Invo-cation
was omitted due to the
absence of a local clergyman
and the Minutes of the previous
Meeting were accepted by the
Board. Mayor Becker explained
to those in attendance that last
Monday evening, the Board had
voted in a Municipal Bond Issue
of $750,000, a 30 year Bond
Issue, of which $600,000 would
be covered in twenty years by
the rental of the old Village
Hall on Merrick Rd. to Nassau
County for a District Court etc,
leaving a sum of about $150,000
to be raised by a Bond Issue,
The costs of the new and
beautifta Vittag^^Hall will In-clude
the fumii^ings complete
^ d all estimates of work such
as electrical etc. The new Vil-lage
Hall which is badly needed
by not only our village govern-ment
but the Lynbrook Police
Dept. and room for a possible
Youth Center or Canteen with
a lovely circular meeting room
for village hall meetings and a
lighted dome which should be
an attractive landmark for many
many miles. All local Lyftferook
people will be delighted with
the grace and beauty of the
architecture of the new build-ings
which will be located on
Penninsula Blvd. and Merrick
Rd. Junctions across from the
present Food Fair, Trustee
Benjamin Rashkin after follow-ing
the Mayor in explaining the
desperate need for a new village
hall explained that for each
100,000 that we raise in a bond
issue, the increase is approx-imately
13? per hundred in vil-lage
taxes. If your home is
assessed at a round figure of
$6,000 you will have to pay an
average cost of an increase of
6.00 total or 78? per hundred
assessed valuation in taxes for
the village, A local resident
questioned the Board about park-ing
facilities for the new village
hall site and was answered by
Trustee Bill Buzzeo who stated
that 89 car spaces would be
available around and adjacent
to the new building with an addi-tional
111 parking stalls for res-ident
parking one block away.
Commuters have been taken care
of as to parking needs as well.
Mr. Monroe Leeds, a local
Scranton Ave. resident question-ed
how much of an increase
in the tax structure would be
added to the Lynbrook tax rolls.
He questioned the extra costs
of the Municipal Bond Issues
now presently on the books for
.such needed items as the new
Fire Dept. Headquarters etc.
Mayor Becker replied that our
present bonded indebtedness as
a mimicipality does not exceed
$1,000,000 sprad out over a long
term of years and when figuring
such estimated costs one must
add income and revenue to this
as well.
At this point in the evening,
their was an opening of sealed
bids at 8:30 p,m, by Village
Clerk Joseph Vitelli for the new
Fire Dept. Pumper Truck. Three
bids were read and received
from York Fire Equipment Corp.
for 60,168, from a firm called
Ware La France in Elmira
Heights, N,Y, for $42,850 and
from Mack Truck Corp. for
$53,105 all with proper bid bonds
and specifications etc. The Board
turned over the bids to the Chiefs
of the Lynbrook Fire Dept, and
the Lynbrook Fire Committee
for further careful review and
study with the Mayor remarking
that their had been 12 bidders
for the contract. The money for
this will be raised in a
Municipal Bond I s ^ ^ ,.
M kesofution of Cond^MPMK^
was passed by th^Boaard which
will be sent to ihilfamily of the
late Lynbrodk Police Dept.
Patrolmen Henry Schaefer who
had just retired one year ago
after 38 years on the Lynbrook
Police Force. The Mayor praised
his complete devotion to duty
and honesty in his work and
Chief Waring stated that Henry
Schaefer had helped to train him
in Police work and that he was
a very dedicated police officer
and friend of many years. It
will be a loss to the village
that such a fine man has passed
away and that he had countless
friends in his years of service
to Lynbrook.
Lynbrook Librarian Mrs. Mary
Bergh gave the October Library
Report and explained the differ-ences
in figures from 1967 to
1968 in a comparison analysis
of Library facilities and books.
Total books circulated in 1968
were 9,817, a drop of only two
from the 1967 report with 270
registered new readers, a total
of 7,723 registered readers and
books, records and periodicals
etc. of 53,374 at the present
time. She gave her usual ex-cellent
report. There are 167
new books as of the month of
Oct. Mr. Richard Kock of Smith
St., Lynbrook was congratulated
by both the Mayor and the Vil-lage
Board on becoming the new
Chairman of the Lynbrook Li-brary
Committee which is vol-unteer
and unsalaried and does
a great Job on behalf of the
residents of the village. A letter
from a village resident complain-ing
about the Lynbrook Taxi serv-ice
in the late evening hours
was read. Mr. William M. Shaw
of Lynbrook complained that he
was unable to obtain a Lynbrook
taxi at 1:00 a.m. one morning
and this greatly inconvenienced
him. It was explained that there
is no service by the taxi com-pany
between 12:30 a.m^- and
5:30 a.m. from Monday to Fri-days
except to the Airport* on
call because the owner finds it
very difficult to obtain drivers
