BECKER RETIRES
Congressman Frank Becker,
in service to the people of this
village and one of i t ' s brightest
figures in political life for many
years announced his retirement
as Executive Head of the Republi-can
Party In Lynbrook at a meet-ing
of the Executive Committee
of Lynbrook last week. The
former congressman, served 6
terms in Congress and 8 years
in the New York State Legisla-ture.
He never lost an election
in his life. He has been in poli-tics
and public life for over 35
years. The former Congressman
feels that it i s time for a young-er
man with more energy and
new ideas to head the local group.
He still retains his place on the
Executive Committee of Nassau
County. He hopes to enjoy his
well earned retirement years at
his s u m m e r ' home In Fort
Lauderdale, Florida but claims
that he wiU always be available
for advice and help to the party
at any time. His fine reputation
for honesty and interest in every
problem of the people of this area
however important has made his
name greatly loved and respected
in Lynbrook and his old con-stituency.
His son, Francis, i s following
in his f a t h e r ' s footsteps in public
life and service and i s serving as
the Mayor of Lynbrook right now,
Mr. Eugene Krause was elected to
take his place at the meeting.
Most local people are happy
to know that Ex-Congressman
Becker will still be available for
his wise advice and invaluable ex-perience.

Murray Levitt stated that his
aim for 1968 was going to be
to further Improve the present
close cooperation and work for
civic betterment between the
Chamber ofCommerce, the Vil-lage
government and the local
people. He was given a great
testimonial dinner and the 1965
"Man of the Year" award by the
Chamber of Commerce for his
fine work In theprevlous years.
This will be his third term as
President during the past ten
years despite a very busy busi-ness
and personal schedule.
PTL French
Apprenhends
Gunman
On Tuesday February 13, about
12:15 AJ^. Ptl, Martin French of
the Lynbrook Police Department
while on motor patrol duty ob-served
a 1965 Mustang sedan
parked on the south side of Scran-ton
Avenue near Bixley Heath
with three male occupants. After
passing the vehicle and recording
the registration number, he park-ed
and observed the occupants.
Ptl. French observed 2 occu-pants
leave the vehicle and walk
toward the Lynbrook Motor Ho-tel
located on Freer Street. He
requested assistance via the r a -
dio for the unmarked police ve-hicle
operated by Ptl. ?ldward
Oklua also an additional mark-.t^
ed police vehicle operated by
P t l . Robert Buckman
to keep the parked vehicle under
surveillance. Ptl. French ob-served
the 2 men looking into the
side window of the Lynbrook
Motor Hotel when they apparently
observed the police officers. The
two then turned and walked away
from the hotel but not before Ptl.
French observed one of the men
throw a gun onto the ground. He
requested additional assistance
apprehended the two men, also
notified the other patrolman to
detain the operator of the vehicle.
The two subjects apprehended at
the scene were identified as Denis
M, DeCastro, age 19 years, of
U,S, Army, stationed at Fort
Dix, N,J„ arrested for posses-sion
of a loaded firearm; Roger
Clark, age 19 years, of 121-02
196th Street, St. Albans, ar-rested
for loitering; and the op-erator
of vcaicl€,-Je&gi^rT&r-
Bostic, age 27 years, of 50 Say-e
r s Avenue, Jamaica, also for
loitering, Denis DeCastro was
also wanted on a Nassau County
warrant for a previous offense
of possession of a loaded weapon.
Lenten Services
Lenten Services will be
different this year at Grace
Lutheran Church, 400 Hempstead
Avenue, Malverne the Reverend
Henry F. Ressmeyer announced
today. Film strips are going to
be shown as part of the sermon
each Wednesday night. The
Lenten Services and films will be
devoted to the Seven Last Words
of Christ and will add a new
and stimulating dimension to the
subject.
Continuing the practice of past
years a small wooden cross will
be presented to those attending
6ither the 7:15 P.M. or 8:15
P.M!. service on Ash Wednesday,
February 28th. Services will
be held every Wednesday night
at the same hours during Lent.
All interested in finding a
"church home" and hearing of
the events leading to the Easter
Revelation are welcome to
attend.
In Case of Fire
On Tuesday, February 27th the
volunteer East Rockaway Fire
Department will again attempt to
alert the public to the dangers of
f i r e , by presenting two vital
movies. Chief Henry Greenstein
will moderate and discuss the
movies, presented at the Ameri-can
Legion Hall on Main Street
in East Rockaway.
The pictures depict fire
hazards, and ways in which people
can help prevent them. They show
how people can save themselves
from severe burns, suffocation
from smoke, or death from fire.
In giving specific advice and
precautions that all can under-stand
these movies can help us
all save lives by being alert and
ready for any fire emergency.
Recently there was a terrible
f i r e in Lynbrook, the repetition
of which no one wants to ever
have repeated anywhere.

The New York State Education
Department recently announced
the names of those high school
pupils who earned scores of suf-ficient
quality on the 1968 Regents
Scholarship Examination to be
ranked as winners or alternates.
