Memorial Day is more than a time to pay tribute to our honored dead.
It is a time of rededication... to our country, our ideals, our hopes for a
future assured of peace. The men who died for our country upheld these
ideals... it is up to us to draw full meaning from their sacrifices, so they
will not have died in vain.
Operation Support America
On Friday and Saturday, May
22nd and 23rd, the Village of
Lynbrook will be the scene of a
special campaign called "Opera-tion
Support America."
The campaign will feature a
petition drive sponsored by the
Howard Lathrop Post #2307, Vet-erans
of Foreign Wars of Lyn-brook
in support of American
ideals, American servicemen
fighting in Vietnam and support
for President Nixon's effort to
bring peace with justice to Viet-nam.
Led by William Montgomery,
a wounded Vietnam War Veteran
and a member of Lynbrook
V.F.W., the objective of "Opera-tion
Support America" is to a-rouse
the people of Lynbrook to
be less silent and more active
in the struggle to bring a just
and lasting peace to Vietnam
and all of southeast Asia.
"As a Vietnam War Veteran,
I have become increasingly con-cerned
with the direction vocal
minority in America has been
pushing our Country's policy in
Vietnam."
"Having been in Viptnam and
having been critically wounded
there, I believe I know the stakes
in this great struggle against
Communist aggression." There-fore,
it is my desire, along with
my fellow veterans, to arouse
our fellow citizens to support
the President's disengagement
policy in Vietnam."
The petition drive will center
at the Lynbrook railroad station
on Friday morning and will move
to the Village shopping area Fri-day
evening and continue all day
Saturday.
"It is our hope," Montgomery
concluded, "that we can collect
thousands of signatures to send to
the President and to demonstrate
that when the chips are down,
Americans stand behind their
fighting men, their Country and
their President.
