Annette Ling
Dr. William K. Louis, Supt.
of Schools of Union Free School
District #19 comprising the Town
of Hempstead, East Rockaway,
a portion of Lynbrook, Bay Park
and Hewlett Point is a tall ener-getic
gentleman who seems to
embody the perfect qualities
necessary for his work and pro-fession.
He is slightly over 6
ft. tall, a well built strong 195
lbs. with blue eyes, brown hair,
glasses, and a quiet pleasant
manner.
Dr. Louis was born in Schen-echtady,
N.Y. and attended pub-lic
schools there, graduating
from Mont Pleasant High School.
He has his A.B. and Masters
in History from Duke University
and his Doctorate in Educational
Administration from Columbia
University. He taught for two
years at his old high school
before 1941 and then joined the
U.S. Air Force in the Pacific
Theatre of Operations and was
in service an actual 46 months.
He was an Air Force Squadron
Executive Officer and earned
the rank of full Colonel before
he was discharged. For a long
period of time he was stationed
in Saipan and vividly remem-bers
the first B-24's and later,
the longer range B-29's. The
Japanese bombed Saipan every
single night when they lost it
and he recalls the shock of all
the personnel when the war sud-denly
ended with Japan's capit-ulation
after the atomic bomb-ing
of both Hiroshima and Naga-saki
in a period of about two
weeks. Dr. Louis, the former
Colonel Louis remarked that the
glamorous Pacific Islands or
South Sea Islands are not at all
like one imagines with heat,
disease and many other draw-backs
to be combatted in the
daily battle of survival there,
although it is now a great deal
improved.
He was married to the former
Ada Rosati at Lowry Field
in Denver in 1942 and stated
that this was the high point of
his entire life. His love and
deep devotion for Mrs. Louis
is a wonderful thing and he
called her quote, "a living doll."
The Louis family have been
blessed with one fine son, Thom-as,
a teacher in Malverne Junior
High School.
After he was mustered out of
the service, Dr. Louis continued
to serve in the U.S. Air Force
Reserve and only retired two
years ago from his duties in the
Reserve.
He returned to his job at Mont
Pleasant High School and from
there spent one year in Albany
with the New York State Dept.
of Education. He was Asst. Supt.
of Schools in Nishayuna, N.Y.
until he came to School District
#19 and his present home on
Grant Ave.
His favorite) hobbies are the
same as his wife and they both
enjoy golf, gardening, and read-ing,
especially historical bio-graphies.
Dr. Louis and his
charming wife particularly like
Scandinavian Smorgasbord and
Dr. William K. Louis
after seeing a play in New York
drop in for their favorite type of
meal.
Both Dr. and Mrs. Louis are
the only child in their respective
families and Dr. Louis' father
and mother, William and Wil-helmina
are both deceased.
Dr. Louis is a member of the
American Assoc. of School Ad-ministrators,
New York State
Assoc. of School Supts., & Nas-sau
County Assoc. of School
Supts.
Dr. Louis feels that, "Today's
young people have every op-portunity
to be better informed,
and the most important thing is
that they exercise good judge-ment
in facing life's problems,
growing in maturity gradually
and under our democratic pro-cess."
This writer was impressed
with Dr. Louis. He is quite evi-dently
a first class administra-tor
as well as scholar and a
quiet and good person. He is
very dedicated and often takes
home work from his office and
comes in every Saturday morning
to clear up any odds and ends.
School District #19 has a very
special administrator and East
Rockaway, a most hard-working
and dedicated resident.
