COOPERATION PLAQUE PRESENTED TO FIRE DEPT. BYP.B.A.
Chief Frank Hillgardner of the Lynbrook Fire Department was the proud
recipient of a plaque given in honor of the many years of cooperation be-tween
the Fire and Police Departments of Lynbrook. Given by the Police
Benevolent Association, the scroll permanently reflects this spirit of cooper-ation.

Rabbi Bernard A. Silver is
one of the most interesting,
learned, and dynamic new clergy-men
to come to Lynbrook In many
years. He is the new Rabbi and

Beth David of Lynbrook with a
fine background in the academic
field.

University. He is also a gradu-ate

York) and the Hebrew Union Col-lege-
Jewish Institute of Religion
and has been awarded

from Hebrew Union College-
School of Education

He has been a Resident Lec- .
turer at Wagner College and

Virginia University and B'nai
B'rith Hillel Foundation. He was
formerly Asst. Rabbi at Temple
B'nai Israel in Toledo, Ohio and
Rabbi at Temple Beth El, Re-constructionist
in Toronto, Cana-da.
Rabbi Silver is a lean and very
fit 5 ft. 8 in., with dark brown
hair and eyes and a fine mustache.
He is handsome, very erudite and
has a cheerful and remarkable
personality for such a life-long
scholar. His favorite color is blue
and he likes soft, soul-stirring
violin music and books on ancient
philosophy, especially Oriental,
ancient mythology and learned
treatises ot^ religious subjects.
He happens to be one of the best
read gentleman this writer has
ever had the pleasure of inter-viewing
and knows so many things
in a wide field from A to Z.
He would like to perpetuate
'tradition in his faith, so that
youngsters will readily accept
the heritage of their fathers. He
mentioned that Judaism is both an
Occidental as well as an Oriental
religion with proud traditions.
Rabbi Silver is married to the
former Shirley Katz, an attrac-tive,
pleasant lady since 1961 and
the couple have three children,
Aliza, age 8, Jay, age 7, and Jon-athan,
the youngest in the family.
His wife has relatives who have
been Rabbis and is the perfect
wife for Rabbi Silver as she is
kindly, sympathetic, and very
interested in his congregation,
especially Hadassah and all the
ladies seem to like her as welU
Rabbi Bernard A. Silver
Her husband pays full tribute to
the role of Jewish women in
proiBulgating the best in Jewish
life. He loves his wife's excellent
cookery and raved about her
stuffed derma and barley soup.
He was ordained in 1954 at the
Jewish Institute of Religion, in
New York City and he cites this
event as one of the most memor-able
events in his life. His
Ordination was the culmination of
so many long years of careful and
arduous study. He speaks Hebrew
and five other languages as well.
Rabbi Silver holds membership
in a Zionist Organization, B'nai
B'rith, Central Conference of
American Rabbis, Toronto Board
of Rabbis as Secretary, and Edi-torial

Council (appointed by the
Mayor), and the Ministerial As-sociation
among others.
He holds a B,A. Degree, an
M.A. Degree, an M.E. Degree,
Fellow, a B.H.L., a M.H.L., and
Rabbi.
The Rabbi is not only quite an
intellectual, but his great un-derstanding
and love of all people
make him an outstanding example
of the best type of clergyman. He
will lead one of the busiest houses
of worship in Lynbrook, and is al-ready
so very much involved with
his congregation and loving every
minute of it. He is witty, very
perceptive, and a great judge of
human nature. He loves children
very much and hopes to make the
proud heritage of the Jewish
people a meaningful part of their
life. The Hebrew School next to
the old synagogue on Vincent Ave.
is one of the busiest places in
Lynbrook U.S.A. as when the
children are finished with their
afternoon classes, the parents
and others often flock into the
school themselves for special
events or talks with the Rabbi.
He has a wonderful smile and is
the type of man one could listen
to for hours. His outstandingper-sonality
and marvelous back-ground
make him eminently
suited for Congregation Beth
David and this writer for one
