Lent Seeks
Penalties For
Gas NegHgence
Horrified at the gas leak ex-plosion
that destroyed the home
of a Massapequa Park family
State Senator Norman F. Lent
of East Rockaway introduced a
bill in Albany making gas utility
companies absolutely liable for
injuries sustained by persons
or property as a result of gas
line rupture or leakage.
The Lent bill is intended to
prod the gas industry into main-taining
higher safety control
levels over the spreading network
of gas pipelines under our
streets.
Said Lent, "Until non-fault lia-bility
is imposed on gas compan-ies
for damages caused by gas
leak, rupture or e^iplosion, they

Citizen complaints of strong gas

Mayor Francis X. Becker, Parks Commissioner "Midge" Korff and
Beautification Committee Co-Chairladies Dot Hornung and Ann Mongelli
have just been notified that Lynbrook is the recipient of the 1969 Distin-guished
Achievement Award for Beautification. The competition is spon-sored
by the National Clean Up-Paint Up-Fix Up Bureau and the village
was entered in the under 26,000 population category. All are invited to Washing-ton,
D.C. on February 24 to accept the award during the National Bureau's
three day conference.
Mayor Becker, who since his election, has spearheaded the Beautification
Campaign through the Village said, "we started by getting rid of the Merrick
Road Junk Yard. The Long Island Rail Road has agreed to remove its ugly
power station. We have made plantings on Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road
malls. There are a dozen other achievements as well. We have an agressive
Parks Commissioner and an extremely active Beautification Committee. Things
aren't perfect yet, but we are getting closer all the time."
The Beautification Committee is one of the 16 Citizen Advisory Groups ap-pointed
by Mayor Becker.
