One of the most interesting,
dynamic and well-liked personal-ities,
is a gentleman called
*'Duke" affectionately by his host
of friends, Chief-Elect of the
Lynbrook Fire Dept., Donald J.
Maffucci.
He is one of those interesting
rarities in that he is a native of
Lynbrook, born and raised right
here and his beloved mother and
father John and Lena are still
residents of Lynbrook, U.S.A.
for over 50 years.
"Duke" attended West End
School and graduated from Lyn-brook
High School in the Class
of 1953, He then attended St.
John's University graduating
from the College of Pharmacy in
1957. He became deeply interest-ed
in pharmacy when he was
encouraged by the late Mr. Frank
Mignano of Mignano Pharmacy
when he worked for him after
school as adeliveryboy. "Duke"
was quite interested in all sports
In Lynbrook High and also, col-lege
and played ball himself.
His idol was Duke Snyder of the
late l a m e n t e d marvelous
"bums," the Brooklyn Dodgers,
Knowing of his own keen interest
in Duke Snyder his friends took
to calling him the same name
and to this day he is Duke and
truly a "Prince of a fellow"
as well.
He was born and raised just
betwixt wars so that he never
had military service, but from
the time he was of age, he joined
the Vulcan Co. of the Lynbrook
Fire Dept. fifteen years ago,
humbly and efficiently working
his way up the ranks in the won-derful
Volunteer Dept. that Lyn-brook
has a right to be so proud
of.
On Aug. 30, 1958, he married
the former Carol Bell at Our
Lady of Peace R,C. Church and
the couple, residents of Lan-caster
St., have three fine chil-dren.
Oldest daughter and her
Dad's great favorite is Donna
Marie, age 12, and then, Jacque-line,
age 10, and Donald, Jr,
age 4, who of course wants to be
a great fire-fighter just like his
Daddy.
He is a full six ft. in height
with a good 200 lbs. spread over
a fit and muscular frame and is
a blue-eyed Italian descent gen-tleman
with a very quiet air
that marks him as a person who
never puts on airs, but is "just
one of the boys, content to do a
fine job quietly and with great
determination." He is, from
all reports, also an excellent

pharmacist and missed his
calling in not going all the way
and becoming a doctor. He has
a very kindly face and is re-markably
acute at summing peo-ple
UP and just what there prob-lem
might be.
Yet his very humility makes
him play down all of his own
years of hard work both as a
volunteer Vamp and in his chosen
profession and a first class man
in his own field. The most
memorable and happy event to
date in his life has been his
marriage to his beloved wife
Carol and his joy at the birth
of- his children. The next big-gest
highlight, is when he is
formally inducted Chief after fif-teen
years of a Dept. he has been
so proud to serve these many,
many years when most of us would
rather sit and watch television
or snuggle in a nice warm bed
during an emergency that
can come 24 hours a day. He
is thrilled and honored that he will
soon begin serving his year as
Chief and then hopes to go back
to college and obtain his Master's
Degree in Pharmacy. Reworks at
South Nassau Communities Hos-pital.
He still loves a good game of
golf and wistfully wishes he had
time to go back to playing the
trumpet which he learned in Lyn-brook
Schools as he loves all
music.
"Duke" has an older brother,
Richard, in Atlanta, Ga. who has
a Pizza Place on the side be-sides
his regular business right
across the street from Georgia
